Hello, I am looking for a pair of waterproof trail running shoes with the highest stack height possible. Any recommendations?

I love them for trail running, they are light and the grip is absolutely amazing. I personally wouldn’t wear them for pavement runs though.

Are you sure you want waterproof? They're good while they keep your feet dry, but when the water does get in (over the tops, or once the membrane has failed) the water can't get out again.

Maybe I don't want waterproof, but able to withstand muddy terrain

I had a pair of Brooks Adrenalin GTS, ran on and off road with them, great cushioning and great grips, even on gravel at the edge of the road and when they got dirty or smelly I threw them in the washing machine. Wore them so much I eventually wore a hole in the bottom! I'm exceptionally flat footed and a really heavy lander and they were brilliant. Then they changed the design of the new model and they weren't as comfy but still really hard wearing...

Yes if you go in mud/water over your ankles the inside gets wet but take the insoles out and stuff em with newspaper under a radiator they’re fine to use the next day.

I don’t rate Asics personally for long distance trail running. I have a pair of Scott which I love which have a lot of cushioning which is unusual in a trail shoe. They’ve done admirably for me recently where one run can be deep snow, mud and ice.
I know a lot of ultra runners who won’t wear anything but hoka and that has the stack height but my fucking god they are ugly.

Should of said I run in Altra Olympus 4 they are really high stack and super comfy. Very good grip and you can do some serious long runs in them

Sorry also forgot to say. You get gaiters for them which definitely helps keep mud and water out your feet.

There's not much point in getting Goretex ones if you are going onto wet/muddy ground - if you get water in your shoes it will stay there. It's much better to get regular ones that will drain easily and wear a decent pair of socks that will keep your feet warm even when wet.

If you're going to be running in proper wet mud, you want to buy the grippiest shoes that you can - ones with fairly big studs on the bottom. Something like the Inov8 Mudclaw is good (although they might have have a high enough stack for you) or the Hoka Mafate or Jawz. If you're going to be on drier or mixed terrain then you can go for something with less knobbles such as Saucony Peregrine or Hoka Speedgoat.

Second salomon speedcross as they are really good trail shoes. Though having run through a river in a pair with goretex, no you don't want a pair with goretex!

I trail run a lot on various types of terrain and wear Salomon Speedcross if it's really muddy, Hoka Speedgoat if it's dry to moderate and La Sportiva Bushido II on very rocky/uneven ground. I have the Gore Tex version of the Speedcross and La Sportiva Ultra Raptors for running in snow and really cold conditions, I live in Canada so they get a fair bit of use but if it's just wet I wear the regular shoes. The Hokas are the most cushioned and are a good all-round shoe. You really need to try shoes on though as everyone's feet and gait are different. If there's a Runners Need store near you that you can get to after lockdown they can do a gait analysis and recommend shoes based on that and what you need them for etc.

I use Inov8 Mudclaws, although not as high as others they have good grip on most surfaces. On uneven surfaces I find it easier to have a lower profile shoe to avoid going over on my ankle.

For keeping your feet dry - Sealskin socks. They now do a merino mix one to avoid the sensation of running worth plastic bags on your feet.

This, as long as you find that Salomon are a good fit for your feet. If not then give Inov8 a try. Fit is the most important thing, once you've narrowed down your options. Feet differ, and what's good for me will not necessarily be good for you.

Okay I def don't want gore-tex anymore, what I want is trainers that have good grip for muddy, wet surfaces even though I won't necessarily go running in them, maybe just fast walking, but I might just run in them sometime; they must have a min of 36mm height stack and plenty of space in the toebox. Any ideas?

What does high stack mean? Does this refer to the depth of the sole, or how high up your ankle they come?
