Looking to buy a house in these areas.
Budget £350k
3 beds minimum, would like an extra for visitors although could be 2nd reception/attic room etc
Would like rural village/ coastal- would be moving from suburban Liverpool so a bit of a change
Kids in Y8 and Y4 so good schools nearby although with present homeschooling etc high school is the best focus
Nice walks for ddog
Please recommend nice areas to look at although we have holidayed in the area we're just wanting some focusses before looking at jobs, tradesman/ office admin so just looking at a starting point really

Thank you!

Best coastal places in east Yorkshire-Filey (that might be just inside north Yorkshire), Cayton/Humanby, Flamborough, Hornsea.

Shitholes-Bridlington is a bit on its arse although it does have its charms in the north and at all costs avoid Withernsea.

Beverley is a bit inland but very nice (about 40 minutes from the beach maybe). Pretty rural, a real pub town with nice old medieval buildings and near Hull and York.

Lincolnshire is just a black hole of misery to me.

Be careful if you are looking at Lincolnshire. Some parts, mostly The Wolds, are lovely but they are a very small area. The rest is dodgy unless you can cope with extreme bleakness in winter.

Northern coastal areas are industrial, run down, impoverished. Further down the coast you get to the holiday areas, miles and miles of caravan parks. Overrun in the summer with visitors, full of amusement parks which are noisy until they shut down for the winter season and then it's dead.

Towards the southern end it's very, very flat fenland, incredibly bleak. Very sparse population so difficult to find friends or people on the same wavelength. Very arable country so fields and fields of vegetables, half the year you are living next door to a field of rotting cabbages....

Parts of Norfolk can be the same if you go to the flat, fenland areas.

If you are looking to move to these areas, make sure you do lots of research and look during the bleakest winter months...if it still looks pretty it's probably OK...

We live in Kings Lynn, it’s a good area with access to the coast and hourly trains to London. Property is reasonably priced.
However. The ‘locals’ are not keen on incomers . We drive up property prices, keep their children out of work and fill hospital beds.
Those who own second properties are the devil and there is a lot of racism directed at
Eastern European people.
Our DD went to a fabulous secondary school and our dog loves the local walking. We don’t go to sandringham any more because of the parking charges and the seasonal dog disease

You would get a lot of house for your money in Scarborough.
Lincoln city might suit your kids when they become teenagers.
Don't choose anywhere which is essentially muddy farmland where your kids will be bored witless.
North Norfolk is full,of retired bird watchers from the Home Counties and property prices are beginning to reflect that.
Nowhere has the vibe of Liverpool though.

Hornsea is lovely (East Yorkshire coast)

Yep. All of them. Not a stereotype at all. It's all pits and paupers.

Eh? You've been to ALL of them in order to form this opinion? The one I mentioned upthread certainly isn't.

I'd avoid places like Withernsea, Hornsea, Bridlington, Scarborough. The smaller villages are nice in between though and further in land. Not sure there's much to do for children though.

Hornsea has an OK High school so could look at the villages around there. I'd go slightly inland as there's coastal erosion to consider.
Beverley is a lovely town, nice shops, cafes, pubs etc. 30 mins to the coast, 3 good high schools, good transport links. Can go into Hull for bigger shops, cinema etc which would suit teenagers. There is also a direct train to London.

To be fair, away from the town centre, there are some absolutely gorgeous houses in Scarborough and you'd get a lot for your money.

We have friends who live in Seamer and in Muston (near Filey) and they have very nice homes! 3/4 adults in those families work elsewhere though, two in York. The other has always WFH.

To add- my point for mentioning this is because the A19 can be a real bitch!

There are some good grammar school in Lincolnshire if you think your dc would benefit from that.

Scarborough has an outdoor theatre that attracts high profile acts in normal times, also an indoor waterpark.

Plus easy access to York might increase employment opportunities, but there are some large employers in Scarborough too, eg McCain.

But you're unlikely to get rational advice on here. I remember a thread where people were were supporting someone's thoughts about moving to jaywick in preference to somewhere on the East Yorkshire coast because they were so blinded by the 'its grin up north' mentality.

Beverley/Cottingham are great. 15/20 mins to the coast. Lots to do for children, next to Hull.

OPs children are Y4 and Y8 though. The beach is great for little ones, so the Y4 is probably still in that zone for a couple of years or so, but loses it's appeal somewhat for teens.

"Things to do" can be a real issue for rural teens as there may not be many places for them to go and parents are likely to be required as a taxi service as public transport is generally poor and school friends can often live in different villages. Do bear this in mind if you are moving from an urban area.

I was brought up in two of the places on this list.
Growing up by the sea is fabulous!
As a teenager I spent a lot of time travelling to Hull for stuff to do- so that's worth considering. A bus route would be helpful.

Does it have to be right on the coast?

Because Beverley is lovely.

DH and I live in West Yorkshire currently and are thinking of moving over that way

"Places like....?" The towns on this list couldn't be more different to eachother if they tried.

Lincolnshire nearer the Notts border is very nice.
Good grammar schools in Sleaford and Grantham. God schools in Lincoln.
You’ll get a good house if you look south of Lincoln and towards Newark or towards Sleaford.
Lots of lovely places to walk dogs.
The ‘ridge villages’ are very popular, ie, Navenby, Caythorpe etc

@Bluesheep8 don't get all offended because it's where you live. Not everyone shares your view - that's fine!!!! Don't come on threads if you get upset easily.

I don't live in any of those places, I just know that there is no comparison between each. They're all on the East coast, that's about all they have in common.

Hotpink - it’s a bit of a leap to suggest that the pp lives there just because they said that all those places are very different! They are! Doesn’t mean that poster was personally offended
