Panicked by man in the park

Napqueen1234 · 21/12/2020 19:22

Tried to take 2 DC for a walk (GOD I HATE WALKS) today along a Christmas trail. It was awful as it was pissing rain, poor DC2 teething horribly and instead of being distracted was hysterical, DC1 lasted 10 mins then was wet cold and miserable. As we reloaded the car after our crappy time and I’m feeling bad as another ‘nice adventure’ has gone wrong this week the man loading his dogs into the car starts chatting to me ‘are you all ready etc?’ I said oh for Christmas? Nearly last few bits and need to pick up turkey etc. ‘No for Brexit and the imminent food shortages? Have you seen their stopping lorries in and out of the UK? We only have 7 days food supply here. Go straight from here to the supermarket and load up you need at least 3 months worth of food. Anything you don’t have 100 of already- GET. You might be saving your children, friends and families lives’. Got in his car and drove off.

I am not a panic buyer, I don’t subscribe to that doomsday negativity usually but honestly I cried the 20 minutes drive home (albeit sneakily so dc didn’t see). I’m scared in case he’s right. I’m so scared of the impact of this bloody virus and Brexit on our lives and my children. We have been in tier 3 forever and will inevitably go into tier 4 soon. I have seen my family twice this year. I have an almost one year old and 3 year old and recovering from severe PND. Today reminded me how hard lockdown all day everything with nothing to do was and now it’s likely January will be like that.

All that was going through my head was ‘i can’t do it’. Got home and burst into tears luckily DH is fab and wfh so sorted the kids.

Do I ignore the man? Is he right? When will things get better? The slog is relentless.

Sorry that there’s a million of these threads.

You met a crazy man in the park. There may be disruption to some products, but there will be food in the shops and you will not starve. Half a million people currently vaccinated. The end is in sight, we just need to hang in there!

We have a vaccine.

Just imagine what this should be like without that.

And breathe.

You can do it. You're doing it every day. Plodding on, one foot in front of the other. You've had a rough time and that guy caught you at a rough moment and so you're feeling overwhelmed today. Tomorrow will probably be better which builds up you're reserve for the next rubbish day that'll inevitably come.💐

He has unfounded anxiety frankly. The situation won’t be that dire. You and your family won’t starve.

Sainsbury’s has already posted what they will run out of, lettuce and citrus fruits. That’s certainly not worth rushing over and stocking up

Did he have a shock of unbrushed blonde hair and a posh English accent?
If not, he was probably just a random nutter.

Thanks 😂 I know that really just hit me in a low moment. It’s my DDs first birthday late Jan and it will mark the shittest year of my life (and many others) along with the first year with my darling daughter. Who hasn’t met most of my family and friends or experienced anything normal at all. I don’t mind me but I worry about the future for the children. Am sounding a bit Maude Flanders myself.

He was just a fruitcake. If he'd told you to wear a tinfoil hat so the lizard queen couldn't control your mind with radio waves you wouldn't have listened.

There are people that live their lives on the edge of panic in normal times. These unusual set of circumstances has sent a lot of people further over the edge. Pity them, don't join them. Just a random doom merchant.

It sounds like those fb stories where the person leans in (obviously now social distancing) confidentially and whispers "avoid Oxford Street/The Westfield shopping centre/somewhere else on the 14th January"... so far nothing's ever come of those "threats".

If you stock up for 3 months you're going to have a lot of mouldy food and sour milk by mid January. At least if you can smell it, you'll know you probably don't have Covid.

You can go and buy a tin of Spam to go with the one from the last time you panic bought if you like, but I wouldn't worry.

Or take a leaf out of @LadyJaye 's suggestion and just think of the lettuce. Although if you start that it could be just the tip of the iceberg.

I feel you on. My twins were 1 last week's. It feels awful saying 2020 was shit when it was the year we had them join our family practically (who can remember the first few weeks anyway 🤣) and sometimes o feel so guilty for having them and there's posts on here with people saying how selfish it is to have kids these days and I wonder of they'll grow up hating me. For having them. For voting in this government (I bloody didn't btw but ynwim), for not protecting their future. They'v met no extended family, which is still more than some of my friends, no baby groups, no toddler groups at this stage. I think he'd have made me cry too

Buy a cake mix, a box of animal cookies/crackers and two cans of icing (choc/vanilla or choc/strawberry or vanilla/strawberry). For her birthday, bake a cake, ice it, ice the animal crackers with a different icing and decorate the cake with a parade of animals. Easy, special, and a wonderful memory for you.

When I started reading your post, I automatically thought when he said "are you ready?" I'd have responded exactly like you thinking he meant for Christmas - that's exactly the way I'd have taken it.
To start crying at Brexit all the way home though and perceived food shortages though, sounds like worries already there and not all to do with him otherwise you wouldn't have let him shake you so much.
He had valid concerns that sounds the same as the ones you have.
Maybe you just didn't want to face them whether he voiced them?

@Quaagars yeah perhaps you are right I have been watching the news and maybe in the back of my mind I have worried that there will genuinely be food shortages etc. @SleepingStandingUp ah I’m sorry it’s been a rough year hasn’t it. As people keep saying to me at least they won’t remember it (only us that’s traumatised!)

There certainly will be shortages of some food, and the French fishermen will certainly blockade Calais in January, but no one will starve.

Apparently after Christmas, lettuce and strawberries will be in short supply. Suits me, now if it was cake and biscuits I would start to worry.

Thanks all for your sensibleness. I went and did our Christmas shop today and...there was SO much blooming food in the shop.

It is a pity you did not have his car number plate. The man concerned should not be driving a car given his mental health.

After March I actually feel more confident in the food chains as long as people stick to normal predictable habits.

If everyone thought like him, there would definitely be an issue.
