Mooncup help

Bear with me, I've not had periods for about 8 years so getting back into the swing of things.

Got my first mooncup today and I have two questions:

  • does it get easier to get the fecker out?? I can reach the little tail bit ok but it just doesn't want to come out!
  • do you still have to wear a pad with it? Maybe it because I'm struggling to get it out but it seems like the taking it out process means enough blood is still in your vagina (but below the cup) that it comes out on your pants (whereas tampons seems to soak up everything). I never use pads as they tend to give me UTIs and defeats the object of it being reusable.

Any advice?

Don't tug at it. You need to break the seal by squeezing the bulb.
No, I never wear anything else with mine.

Oooh so like a small squeeze to break the vacuum? Thanks! I didn't realize

You need to break the seal.

I usually back up either with a cloth pad or a pair of period pants. Highly recommended modibodi

I wear washable pads because I’m a bit paranoid. They rarely actually get blood on them - hence the shift to washables.

Remove it by baring down then breaking the seal by pinching slightly. Takes a few goes to get the hang of it, but I wouldn’t be without mine now

Yes you need to reach up further than the tail and grab and squeeze the base of it to get the little blighter out.

You want to stand with legs akimbo, squat and ‘bear/bare(?) down’.

I love my mooncup so much but I am not keen at all on the removal process so try and keep it to shower times as much as possible. I could go into more detail but I better not Grin

It will become second nature soon OP, I had issues getting mine in and out the first few cycles but now I barely think about it.

I wear mine with modibodi knickers as back up in case of leaks.

Please don't 'bare down'. after a year it has given me a prolapse 🥺 I wish I had known not to do so

Lads 😂

It gets so much easier. It really is the lazy lads answer to periods. Persevere it’s worth it

Yeah between the need to even slightly bear down and also the fact it seems to naturally sit on my cervix which makes sitting down uncomfortable my mooncup and I went our seperate ways a few months ago after almost a year together.

They’re very environmentally friendly but also not for everyone. I use reusable pads now.

Whatttttt @nokia3210567 how else do you reach it if you don’t? I’m worried now.

Pinch the base to break the seal and pull. Don’t pull on the stem.

Usually during your period your cervix drops so you shouldn’t need to reach too far- i occasionally need to push down until I get a grip, but relax for the actual removal.

I love my mooncup, but I’d say it took a good six months to be practiced enough for it to be easy. I think I nearly gave up around month two but glad I persevered.

Everyone is different. For mine to be comfortable I can’t let it sit low like you’re supposed to, i push it right up and make sure the rim is firmly seated round the cervix. A little squeeze to seal and that’s it, no leaks, can’t feel it and it stays firmly put.

You have to find out what works for you.

Whatttttt *@nokia3210567* how else do you reach it if you don’t? I’m worried now.

You have to be careful it isn't sat too high and also break the seal before you do anything to remove. Biggest thing is to not bear down whilst removing. I wish Id known I don't think there is enough advice out there. Such a shame as I loved my mooncup but now having to have surgery.

I use reusable pads now, I have always hated pads but actually these are far more comfortable and feel much cleaner that disposable pads. I am going to invest in some period pants for my lighter days.

Bloody hell, thanks for the info. I hope you’re surgery goes all right! I think I wear mine quite low anyway but I’ll be extra careful from now on.

It does get easier. If you’ve seen All Creatures Great and Small, you might be at an advantage.

Just got one of these and am wondering if I can use it overnight?

@SweetieP1e

Yes you can :). In fact because they don’t absorb and dry out the mucous membranes they’re much safer than tampons and can be left in for longer.

Do you ever change them at work? On a particularly heavy day. It's been such a messy affair for me I dare not. I also need a lot of space for the squatting Grin and I can't in the tiny cubicles at my work. It has only been 3months though so still working it out.
