Tablet for 8 year old (not iPad or kindle)

LargeProsecco · 30/11/2020 11:45

My near 8 year old DD is constantly pestering for my iPad. I got her a kindle in years gone by but her main issue is that apparently you can't get the you-tube app on it.

She plays Roblox and watches you-tube.

I don't want to fork out for an iPad, but wondered if there's something less expensive, which she could still use?

A friend mentioned the Samsung tablets- but I have no clue!

Any recommendations?

I have a Samsung tablet, which I have had for a few years, and have just bought one for my son for his birthday. I think they are excellent. They are not particularly expensive new (£180ish) but I wanted to spend less than that for my son and managed to find an as new 2nd hand one for £50.

@PrayingandHoping - we've had kindle fires before, but she says that she can't get the you-tube app on it or play Roblox

Is it possible your parental control setting is restricting access to these apps?

I'm just trying to charge her old kindle which has a cracked screen - wasn't sure what parental controls she had set up.

Also just checked out the price of the Samsung tablets - about £300 - much more than I was intending to spend.

I'll revisit the kindle & see if I can get a higher spec one than what she had.

I'be changed the parental controls on the cracked screen.

Kindle and Amazon Fire are different things, fire tablet is what you're after, I would look now as they will be on Black Friday sales.

@catsmother20 - thanks - you are correct in saying they are in sale on Amazon. Also some good deals in Argos. Just deciding between 2 models.

@Sprig - am I right in thinking the Samsung's operate on Android?

Can you download apps?

I'm hopeless at using anything other than Apple products.

Yes, Samsung are android. You download apps through the Play Store (just like on an Apple, I think, I have never had an Apple!).

Just as a final thought - what is charging the Samsung like?

I've found the charging port of the kindle to be quite flimsy & a few have broken over the years - it's almost a design flaw.

I have a kindle never had an issue

The Fire is not a Kindle. It's totally different. I bought one for my (technophobe) parents after my friend bought a couple for her kids. No issues with using or charging

I have had no problem with charging my Samsung tablets. I don't even need to do them that often as they hold charge brilliantly. They seem to have v good build quality. No complaints here. I have Samsung phones too and never had any issues.

The kids Amazon fire tablet only allowed YouTube kids I think but the normal fire has normal YouTube. They are different to a kindle. I don't think a Samsung would be much cheaper than an iPad mini. I find all non apple devices being handled by dc end up with broken chargers or charging ports eventually though. Usually an easy fix or covered by warranty.

My kids had a kids fire - I had to lift all the restrictions to allow them access you tube, not you tube kids. They havent played Roblox so I don't know about that.

Would you consider an ipad from CEX? We never really got on with the fires, they are so unintuitive, the silk browser is crap.

We bought a Samsung tablet last year for my young son - I wasn't keen on the Amazon Fire as the kids version was limited re access and the adults version seemed more difficult to 'lock down'. We bought a samsung and we were able to put in parental controls (which are a bit annoying but necessary)
