What additions to Christmas Dinner do you have that others consider strange?

Off the back of the Thanksgiving thread (I'm drooling!), I thought about our Christmas dinner.

Over the years, we've added the following that have now become standard:

Cauliflower cheese
Steamed red cabbage & raisins
Sweetcorn (for me!)


What additions do you have?

We make mashed potatoes for ds2 as he doesn’t like roast potatoes (weird kid).

Husband is insistent that mashed potato is an key part of the meal. Me (and mum) love a prawn cocktail starter. My dad would rather have trifle than mince pies, as Christmas pudding is a Boxing Day meal apparently. My youngest has only ever eaten kilted sausages (pigs in blankets), whilst my eldest who loved all of christmas dinner, has decided to be veggie so not 100% clear what she will be eating...

We always have three starters, smoked salmon and brown bread, garlic and chilli prawns, soup.
It's probably more lunch and then Christmas dinner is a few hours later.
But three starters sounds more decadent
Can I ask how people make cauliflower cheese? I don't think I've ever had it.

We eat beef on Christmas and I insist on both Yorkshire pudding and stuffing, which my grandma thinks is very strange and wrong.

I just love everything- mashed potatoes, apple sauce, roasters, Yorkshire puddings , stuffing- every part of a Sunday dinner coming together!

Cauliflower cheese here too plus potato croquettes. We always had potato croquettes when I was a child as I didnt like roast potatoes, now I love a roast potato but DS1 doesn't so croquettes it is.

My mum makes what we call bacon rolls, by wrapping the Turkey livers in bacon like pigs in blankets. Absolutely delicious but I've never seen them anywhere else.

Always cauliflower cheese, never Yorkshire puds.

@M0rT Cauliflower Cheese... where have you been? ?
Make a white sauce, butter, flour, milk. Add lots of cheese of choice. Boil cauliflower. Place in oven dish with cheese sauce over the top. Sprinkle extra grated cheese on top and grill or bake. Can add extras (mustard, nutmeg, breadcrumbs for crunch).

Bread sauce

Ours includes an unusual number of prunes, I guess that's not normal? We have prunes in bacon with a glass of champagne before dinner, then I soak the rest in port, add a little chocolate and puree to have with shortbread and ice cream. Also nice to mix prune puree (sans chocolate) with mustard to spread on turkey sandwiches.

I rarely touch a prune the rest of the year, not sure how our festive celebrations have become so prunecentric.

We have nibbly starters of Thai/Indian/Chinese canapés

Cauli cheese and red cabbage are standard enough now that they’re included in Sainsbury’s Christmas sides collection. Love them both though.

Nothing unusual about bread sauce/apple sauce/mashed potatoes either.
