Is @ mentioning someone on a thread now not the done thing?

Noticed people being “told off” for @ mentioning other posters on threads.
I’ve been on MN for probably ten years and never noticed anyone complaining but seen it twice today.

Was it never the done thing? Is this a new issue? Do we not mention who we reply to anymore?

Why are they complaining?

I always @ people. Are we not supposed to? I thought that was the whole point of the function!

I think on MN, there will always be someone telling someone off for something.

Not sure -it wasn’t aimed at me - but didn’t seem to be in a bun fight situation. More one person being told “it’s irritating” and can’t remember on the other one.

I’ve always used it - but I suppose now there’s “quote”.

I have only just started suing the @ function.
I still like the old fashioned way or shortening a posters name, it’s friendlier.

@Waxonwaxoff0 (see what I did there)... so did I. It’s that I’ve literally seen it mentioned twice in one day so got me wondering.

Personally I think you’re more likely to cause offence if you don’t use it

It’s because of the ridiculously annoying new notification “feature”

They are complaining because they get an email alert and their phone beeps at them. Is what you have to say so important that it needs to disturb their day?

Report
DaphneFanshaw · 17/11/2020 20:41

Ahhh, was about to say I wonder if it’s anything to do with that.

But the notification feature bloody comes up even if someone just comments on a post you’re on doesn’t it?

Why don’t they just turn of the tagging function....
I am sure HQ said that we could do that easily.

Anyone complaining about it would just get told to sort their own settings out if they don't want to receive notifications!

That's a much simpler solution than me remembering the preferences of millions of posters!!

Idiots.

Count (see I didn’t @ you) but surely what instead happens is complete confusion. Or worse still you come across as massively offensive if a subsequent poster thinks you’re talking to them.

I don't use @ here because it results in the person getting an email and that feels intrusive. If the person is interested enough to stay in the thread they'll see your reply just using their name or quote.

I don't like it when people start @ ing someone who has left a thread to try and get them back. Or because they want updates on someone's upsetting circumstances for their entertainment.

I have seen plenty of people asking others to stop @ ing them.

Indeed!

But @ username isn't mentioning someone, is it - it's sending an email notification to that person that they have been mentioned?

Report
Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/11/2020 20:46

You get emails anyway though if someone comments on a thread you're on.

I get so many stupid emails from mumsnet, one every time I’m @‘d and then loads about AIBU polls 😂 how do I stop them

I've only seen it when people are already bickering. "Don't @ me!" is the new "CAT me you cunt"

It's not really that much of a nightmare getting a @ is it? Or a notification? Doesn't really impact on one's day? You can just choose to ignore!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/11/2020 20:48

I've set my emails from Mumsnet to spam so I don't get them in my inbox! Grin

It's very intrusive to use the @ function - it just seems so demanding to want to plonk yourself into someone's private mail box.

Just use bold .

I'm not confused. You named the poster you were replying to.

Intrusive! Really?

Report
Jinglebellissimo · 17/11/2020 20:50

Hmm I’ll go back to bolding then. As I don’t have my settings to send notification I didn’t even realise it goes to their email.
