Boring Nintendo switch question

LynnAnneBenfield · 15/11/2020 14:56

I have a plastic thing that the 2 joy cons fit into to become a hand held controller (first pic) my question is, if I buy one of the wireless controllers that are available (second pic) will we be able to use them both for 2 player things? So one will be the 2 joy cons in the plastic thing, and one will be a normal controller?

I can't find the info anywhere and want to avoid having to buy 2 new controllers as they're quite expensive.

Thanks to anyone that can help

Or the other option is to buy 2 more joy cons and another plastic thing thus making 2 controllers for 2 player?

Does that sound right? I'm worried to play 2 player things you might only be able to do so with one joy con each? Not 2 full controllers each, if that makes sense?

I don't know, but we've never had any problem playing multi player using one joy con per person. Is there a reason you don't want to do that?

Yes I have a wireless controller I use and then everyone else gets the joy con one

We can use the joy cons one per person but I hate it, I find them really hard to use and too small etc, just personal preference I guess ☺️ thanks for the replies

Yes you can use the two joy cons as one controller and the wireless one as another. My son has a wireless controller from amazon that was only £20 and works just as well as the official switch ones.

Can i add another boring switch question to your thread? We dont have one yet but planninb to for xmas.

If I buy a game - can we all have our own saved games in it. I rememeber getting a 3ds and being surprised it was 1game 1 player so they couldn't share!!!

Yes you can, DS has both types.

I think it will depend on the game, you can’t do it with Mario Odyssey , it’s either resume existing game or 2p, not sure about other games.

You can create your own profiles with your own save data. Except animal crossing.

Ah thats really helpful. So if 2 of us wanted tk play animal crossing - we'd need 2 games or 2 switches?

So far we're looking at the family multiplayer games anyway but here's interest in animal crossing/zelda/lego movie.

Yes. We do this

Can still play but I think you have 1 main character and then anyone else who wants to play cant have their own island for example.

LynnAnneBenfield · 15/11/2020 19:04

Yes we have each got a profile and all the games we've had so far have saved our individual progress on our profile so as long as you stick to your own profiles you should be fine I believe.

Animal Crossing is one island per Switch. You can have multiple people play it on one console but everyone will be on one island - the first person to play the game will be that main player and have most control.

I also have a boring switch question - when you say multiplayer does this mean more than 2? Are there games we can play as a family of four? Would we need two switches?

We are planning to get extra controllers. I think 12 switch, party and kart can all bw played as a family? Love to hear if that's the case?

Its what has swayed us to switch over xbox. I guess in the modern place of the wii.

@LynnAnneBenfield - do we each need a controller? Are they wireless? I'm such a switch newbie

I'm just about getting by but I'm struggling with it all abit Confused

Here's what I do understand if it helps! The switch comes with 2 'joy cons' which are either side of the console when hand held

You can use one of these each for 2 player things, so essentially you need a minimum of 1 per person for however many people want to play

But I do not like doing this as they're quite small and not that easy to use as a proper controller on their own in my opinion, so you can double them up with the thing I put a pic of in the OP (no idea what it's called, an adapter thing 🤷🏻‍♀️) but obviously then you need double the amount of that makes sense?

So basically you need one joy con each for multi player, but I would recommend maybe looking at buying the cheaper controllers you can get on Amazon I think you can get for about £20 (compared to about £60 for 2 additional joycons) as they are like proper controllers you get on any other console and much easier to use that a single joy con ☺️

Thank you I see what you mean - our adult hands probably need the two joy cons plus adapter to make it into a PlayStation / Xbox type controller....

How expensive is this Christmas going to get!!

Report
SionnachRua · 17/11/2020 17:53

You could look into getting the Switch Pro Controller instead of more joycons, it's supposed to be excellent. Though I guess it's another expense to add onto Christmas!

Joycons are notorious for having drift problems so having a spare pair at least means you'll always have a backup. They're not cheap though so it shouldn't have to be that way.
