I wonder if Colombo was ever offered promotion?

I'm bored! I love Colombo and if I was Chief of Police I would have offered him promotion to at least Captain many times.

Of course, this would no doubt take Colombo out of the field where he is unsurpassable, and require him to do paperwork which I imagine isn't his forte. But his murder clearance rate must surely be the highest in the department so I hope there was some recognition of his achievements!

Any thoughts? Like I said, I'm bored!

Like you say, he probably didn’t meet his paperwork KPIs and I’m guessing didn’t kiss enough ass either.

True. And I think we can safely say he didn't dress for the part either!

He was one of my first crushes. I love him still.

I think he would have refused promotion and hopefully the top brass were sensible enough not to offer it but to reward him in other ways.

I was confused until I realised you meant Columbo. But yeah he would have refused promotion I think.

I love Columbo, 5 USA every Sunday, he is cute (in the early ones) lieutenant is high up though eh? And good as he is, there are occasions when another murder occurs while he is investigating the first! Shit I sound too invested in this 🥴

This. He was probably kept where he was so his boss could keep an eye on him.

He is fab though and I love the Sunday episodes on 5USA. Robert Culp is the baddie in a few Columbos and is excellent at it.

His managerial skills would be disastrous. I’m sure he wouldn’t have wanted promotion

He would check everything you're doing "one more time".

I was really annoyed the other Sunday when I went to the afternoon columbo binge channel and realised that I had seen all of them so many times I knew exactly what was going to happen etc

Gutted. I don't think there's any I haven't seen now.

Just one disaster after another in lockdown.

Oh god, I've loved him all these years and I've been spelling his name wrong! Sorry Blush.

I think his managerial skills would be ok actually. He's kind and astute and well aware of when someone's taking the piss. He wouldn't be so good at arranging all the one to ones and performance assessment meetings, and target setting etc, but I think he'd get by - he's nothing if not persistent!

Yes to this :(. I still watch them though. The ones that were made in the 80's aren't so good. Although tbf he was 75 then.

He was offered. But upon careful consideration with his never seen wife he turned it down and wants to ride it our until retirement next year.

Yes the 70s ones are the best.

I get a feeling that he wasn’t considered management material. Imagine him doing your appraisal - all going well, then he turns around and says “oh but one last thing”...

Next thing you know you’re escorted off the premises without so much as notice period.

As a star trek fan the fact that we have both shatner and nimoy as baddies makes me strangely happy Smile

It would be foolish to promote him. He single-handedly manages to solve murder cases, whereas those Real Life British Police seem to need a whole team to do the same thing lightweights . Presumably he comes relatively cheap, if his raincoat is anything to go buy, so he is an excellent use of the departmental budget. He refuses to the politics thing. I bet he doesn't play golf, and is not in the USA equivalent of the Masons either! Grin

Double Exposure (another Robert Culp one) is a favourite of mine, as well as Now You See Him, with Jack Cassidy.

I don't think I've ever seen this one either, and I thought I'd seen them all.

I read that Peter Falk had a very high iq and was a really good chess player. Sad to think of him suffering with dementia.

As much as anything, I love all the sets/clothes/home decor etc of the 70's ones
