Anyone sent a Peloton bike back?

BiteyShark · 14/11/2020 09:28

DH likes the idea of one when the weather is rubbish rather than going out on his road bike.

Since WFH full time due to covid my exercise is almost 0 and my motivation is about the same but my comfort eating is 100% so I need to get a handle on my health.

If I said I would use one DH would jump at getting it but I just can't decide whether all the reviews about it being addictive would apply to me. I have read the threads about the cheaper alternatives but if we were going to do something like this it would be a Peloton. But I just am not sure. Would it be a clothes hanger only being used by DH occasionally?

Recent threads on here seem to be of people raving about them but just wondering whether anyone has sent one back or sold theirs because they just couldn't be bothered with it?

I'm wondering the same thing - DH is keen but I'm not sure

I see there is a 30 day money back trial but I imagine I could be motivated for 30 days for the novelty but long term it's the question.

Carriemac do you exercise regularly now? My concern is that I haven't found anything sustainable especially something that I can fit around FT work, looking after the dog (I don't get enough exercise from him as he wants to hunt not walk) and looking after the house.

I'm the poster you're going to hate, but have you considered an actual bike and going for cycles outdoors (I know, you really do have to live in an area that is nice to cycle in). And also, it's easy for me, a long-time, all-season cyclist, to think that this is an easy solution for all, but it's not. I do understand this.
But I think actually getting outside for an hour and riding is so great for your physical and mental health. It may not offer the same intesity as a Peloton bike, but long-term, you'll return to an actual bike. There is a huge possibility the Peloton bike will become a clothes hanger.

I just think Peloton might be the most expensive spin class ever! Grin Do you get your money's worth, I wonder?

What about a turbo trainer as a less expensive option?

Good question about an actual bike.

I did have one but after falling off it several times at very low speeds and once ending up in A&E I no longer want to cycle for real. I was never a good cyclist and my experience confirmed I am a danger to myself outside on one Grin

My DH has a turbo trainer set up for one of his bikes and uses that with Zwift, which is a much cheaper alternative.

I just cannot get over how expensive Peloton bikes are - and then you have to pay the bloody subscription, which ain't cheap either, on top!

Do you get the monitor/screen thing included or are you supposed to use your own device?

Can’t you get a cheaper bike and set it up in front of a TV and cycle whilst watching Bake Off?

I am a fair weather cyclist and bought a Peloton in August. I am using it every other day and have lost weight and inches. It’s excellent for my busy lifestyle, I work full time and have 2 young children. I wouldn’t go and run in the evenings l, do a dog walk in the morning and need to slot in exercise where I can. In 30 minutes, I can spin 8 miles, I’d never be able to cycle that on a cold rainy day! The app is amazing for 10 minute abs or arm classes. I even do the yoga and meditation in the evening. I love it and say go for it. They seem to have good resell value on eBay if you really don’t use it. We are getting excellent value from it. I don’t need a gym membership and am fitter and thinner!

We've not got a Peleton bike but a good quality cross trainer and use it three times a week. You have to set times you're going to use it so it begins a routine. I find feeling so much fitter motivates me.

I have a bike but live rurally and really hate winter cycling , especially in the dark ,

Apex bikes are also worth looking into. Bit cheaper than Peloton.

You could get a much cheaper spin bike and then get Les Mills on Demand. It's 12 quid a month (I think it works out quite a bit cheaper even than that if you get the years subscription) and they have 3 separate styles of cycling/spin class (Sprint, which is HIIT cycling, The Trip, which is like virtual reality style cycling and RPM which is a spin class) each of which has dozens of classes within to choose from. Plus you get all the other classes as well which are brilliant, you can link it up to your TV, device, whatever.

If you’re not sure and don’t want to make the big investment you can get a perfectly good spin bike for about £600 (probably less). You can subscribe to the Peleton app without the bike very cheaply and get about 80% of the total experience. Buy a heart rate monitor and a cadence monitor (£60) and you get up to about 90%. That way you can see if it works for you without breaking the bank. That’s what I did, and when it emerged that I was completely hooked (after about a year) I sold the spin bike on eBay and bought a Peleton. I’m still not convinced that I really needed the upgrade, but I had been totally sucked in by then!

I've got a spin bike in my home gym .from memory I think it was about £450. Much cheaper than a peleton. Legs still do the work but you have to motivate yourself. Or ask your other half you yell at you in a peleton voice in exchange for you doing an M&S cake talk over after you've worked out perhaps ?!?

Another vote for turbo trainer & Zwift.

With Peloton I understand you’re tied into an expensive monthly fee & the expensive bike is made redundant if you stopped your subscription? Is that correct?

With Zwift it’s £12 or something a month, I can stop at any time & use my bike / turbo with another equivalent plus I can actually ride the bike outside.

Seems like a no-brainer & I struggle to see the appeal of Peleton ( please correct me if I’m missing something)

Thanks everyone for the responses. Was sat watching YouTube last night for reviews as well as people comparing the cheaper alternatives.

Think we are going to take the plunge but a shame we will have more than three months wait for delivery of the new model.

This is the set up we've got. DH is a keen cyclist, so bought a spinning bike (secondhand one). During lockdown, I was given free access to the Peloton app, so I had a go. I've really enjoyed it, never used the spin bike much before that (although I did do other exercise), now use it 2-3 times a week, plus sometimes use the other exercises on the Peloton app. It's only £12.99 a month anyway, so might be a way of dipping your toe in (but of course added spin bike cost if you've not got one).

OTOH, I've got a couple of friends and family who love their Pelotons. I could see myself be quite tempted if I didn't have other outlets. But if you give up gym membership and only do Peloton, it starts to make more sense. I don't have a gym membership, but do pay for a PT and yoga classes, neither of which would I want to give up, so the total cost is just too much for me.

I have a peloton, it works well for me. There is no way I’d go out on a road bike in the winter, too wet scary cold and too much effort. The peloton is brilliant, it sits there all ready with no chance of a puncture etc, I can hop on, not get wet or cold, switch a programme on to suit how much time I have, 20 mins, 30 mins, etc, and can compete against other people doing it at the same time if I want, or not.

Haven’t looked behind cycling with it but going to look at other stuff now eg yoga.

I’d highly recommend it.

Get a normal cheap spin bike then get peloton digital app £12.99 a month or les mills on demand app £9.99 a month. Plenty of spin classes but don't need to shell out for special peloton bike.

Has he considered Zwift subscription and a turbo trainer instead? Seems to be a more popular option for roadie cyclists than peloton.

It's crazy expensive. I wonder if for some people they think that if they spend this much money on it they must use it, like with gym memberships.

I have a regular bicycle with a turbo trainer. I watch stuff on TV or iPad. It's way better than a stationary bike
