Is it a nice place to live? Seriously considering moving but I’m completely aware that going on holiday repeatedly somewhere is not like actually living there!

No, not really.

Yeah, I'd say its nice.
Its very pretty and has lots of cool historical stuff.
The town centre has all the usual high street shops and some nice independant ones.
The atmosphere is a little more liberal that Essex generally. It has a good theatre and a couple of art venues.
Decent transport links to London and other nice places in the region.
I grew up there.

I used to leave quite close and loved it. Haven't been in over 5 years so can't comment on any recent changes.

Parts of it are nice, like anywhere really. I'm a bit out of date but would say the more solidly residential bits. I prefer other Essex towns though.
A friend of mine who had lived there since childhood (I hadn't) had an interesting observation. Don't know how consistently true it is, but it worked for the time I was there: he said it was a real barometer of the times - when things are good, it's really on the up; when things are generally bad, the crap is really magnified too.

Colchester is quite nice and there are some lovely surrounding areas. (I live about 17 miles away and its the closest big town.)

Well thats where i live and always have so ill give you my opinion. Traffic can be a problem at usual busy times. Good schools, good shops and new out of town shopping cinema areas being built. Lots of new housing going up which im not so keen on as i believe it is becoming a big town now . As like any town nice areas and those not so nice . Overall it is the fastest growing town in the uk so bare that in mind . Nice local villages though eg layer, dedham, gt horksley, west bergholt . I will be moving to a village on the outskirts due to becoming too busy for me .

You are lovely aren’t you!
Not very helpful. Can you expand on why it’s not? If not maybe go and speak to people like that on another thread

I can't reply directly to your comment but we are moving to Colchester from London and I know other families who are considering to move there. It seems to be an up and coming town where Londoners are moving to. This is probably why they are building it up and refurbishing it.

Hope we love it since I never thought I would leave London.
