Hi

I'm losing weight by counting calories but need some low carb and filling ideas that are also low carb and sugar. It's very tricky! Can anyone help? Im pre diabetic so have to be careful.

Thanks

Light cheese? Cold cooked prawns?

And I mean something I can snack on in the evenings. So not eggs! I keep going to bed starving, trying to avoid having lots of sweeteners as well.

Are you following a low-carb AND low-cal diet?

Low carb low calorie crackers with 0% fat cottage cheese and some sliced tomatoes or cucumber?
We have ryvitas, lots of different varieties of those available and they're nice and filling especially the high fibre ones. Or could substitute the cottage cheese for low fat spread cheese?

Yes I'm trying too. Just low carb doesnt work for me but if I limit my calories too it ensures that I limit my portion sizes and lose weight. I'm trying to avoid getting diabetes and cutting out sugar, carbs and losing weight are the best way to do this. Im not eliminating fat from my diet though just keeping an eye on my calories.

Thank you. Ryvita is a good idea. I've not had cottage cheese for many years. Is it nicer now!

Ryvita isn't low carb.

I'm trying to keep low carb and not too many calories to try and keep my diabetes under better control and loose some weight.

Last night I had a tin of tuna and then a sugar free jelly. Snacking in the evening is my biggest problem.

My suggestions are:
Sticks of vegetables (maybe with a little bit of hummus)
Danone light and free yogurt (the only yoghurt I've found that is sugar free and fat free)
Slices of quorn

I find low calorie snacks are tough. A coffee with full fat milk was good and filling. Ditto an options hot choc.

Or a handful of nuts.

A little bit of fat is more filling.

Oh are Ryvita not low carb.

I agree it's very tricky. Nuts are good though. They do fill me up. Ham with cream cheese is quite good.

When I did low carb, I used the 'carb manager' app on my phone. It really helped me track my carbs and can also tell you sugar/fat info etc. Are you sticking to a certain carb amount per day?

Air popped corn is lower carb. you can make up various savoury powder mixes to sprinkle over the top.

If you're pre diabetic you need to understand all about carbs, look at dietdoctor.com, you can reverse that status with food

Low fat Greek yoghurt. Add protein powder.

The best way I've found to keep hunger at bay is to carb load - eat protein and fat for breakfast, protein and veg based lunch and have some unrefined carbs with your evening meal.

If you're hungry you probably need more protein. These are my protein superfoods; milk, turkey and skyr type no fat, natural yogurt. These are all low cal but will fill you up. If you're on low calories then you need to be careful of the "pay off" on how you use your calories ie a turkey sandwich will probably fill you up more than ryvita and cottage cheese (another great protein food!). I wouldn't recommend going low carb as your body needs carbs and they're in a lot of food, just choose your carbs sensibly.

I like the high protein skyr. Very low in sugar, no sweeteners. Not massively low calories but v filling

I don't snack as I don't feel the need.

Oh and My Fitness Pal is a good app to use.

Thank you. Some helpful ideas and advice. Hopefully in time I wont feel the need either but it's a slow process of getting the right balance. I've lost 5lb in two weeks which I'm really pleased about.

Low carb and low cal doesn't work either

Its the fat and protein that satisfy your appetite so if you aren't getting enough of those because of calorie counting then you will end up feeling hungry (as you are!)

What was it about low carb that didn't work for you? If diabetes is a real concern for you then you might want to post in the low carb bootcamp board for some help.

Thanks Pertella. I just eat too much cheese and cream and my portions are too large!

These are supposedly 50% lower carbs, depends how low you want to go, if trying to totally cut carbs then crackers aren't an option then.

I also like Fage yogurt with a little bit of fruit like chopped raspberries or strawberries to give a small amount of flavour and sweetness. Nice and filling but I'm sure someone will be along to tell you fruit is not low carb! Its all about balance and if you totally cut all carbs and sugars it will be a bit gruelling and tasteless diet.

Low calories definitely work, if you can manage to include enough fat and protein to keep you feeling full

wowfudge · 01/11/2020 10:14

Nonsense Pertella - Fast 800 and Blood Sugar Diet disprove this. They are supposed to be followed for a short time and the benefits are many for those with Type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, to much visceral fat.

I'm not completing cutting out carbs and sugar just reduce. Sorry I should have made that clearer. Low carb not no carb!
