Sean Connery is not a legend

Some will consider this bad taste - it’s the day he died I know. But this is a man who condoned hitting women. And though he qualified his endorsement by saying you shouldn’t hit a woman like you would a man, I think it’s enormously damaging that someone in his position - who so many people look up to - can make comments like this.

I’m sad for his family as I would be sad for any family who have lost a loved one. But I don’t think he should be remembered as a “legend”.

Anyway, here is a link to Sean Connery in his own words.....

Ah thank you. I saw that thread but when it was just platitudes. I’ve not read any others as they all seemed to be in honour of him.

OP, I didn't click on that but I did watch that clip a few years ago. If I recall correctly, what I found most disturbing is that he explains, in a rather matter of fact way, that it is appropriate to slap a woman on occasion. No big deal.

He was not a good person

Regardless of him being a git or not, and I'm sure there is an interesting conversation to be had... But Jesus Christ he's only just died.

its because of the fawning and praise of him wine-do you become a saint when you die no matter what

I'm sure I've seen it before but can't remember exactly what he says-it's OK to slap a woman when they're getting on your nerves?

Something like that?

Ugh, people are fawning on my newsfeed. Thanks for posting this. I'll share it for some fucking perspective. I hate how so many are made saints of when they die. You're right. He wasn't a legend. He was a nasty man who thought it was OK to slap women.

I completely agree with you, OP.

On a side note, and obviously of no comparative importance, it also irks me when people misuse the word 'legend'. The BBC are particularly fond of it, but a 'legend' describes somebody like Robin Hood or King Arthur, who was said to once exist but of whose life there is no historical proof. It doesn't describe anybody whose existence was 100% documented except maybe John Legend. A bit like 'angel' - all it means is a messenger, not an all-round amazing person. Sorry, don't mean to derail!

Yep, the fawning over a man who said women should be slapped for trying to get the last word in is fucking depressing.

And Roger Moore was a better Bond.

I can’t get hysterical about any 90 year old dying.

About 15 years ago we got chatting to the concierge in a smart Edinburgh hotel.
He'd met many famous people.
He didn't have a good word to say about Sean Connery.
I knew he had slapped a partner in the past.
A good James Bond perhaps but Roger Moore was a good James Bond and a gentleman too.

Tbh I don’t think that slapping anyone is idea or acceptable unless in self defence. As part of an argument it’s just wrong- whether it me a male or a female. I don’t see why him saying hitting women is any worse than him saying hitting men is okay. Neither is.
But if someone felt he was a good actor or feels saddened by his death due to being JB fans etc- that’s fine too imo. Legend? Nah. But I can’t think of anyone I’d describe as being a legend I don’t think.

Thanks for posting that. I never liked him but couldn't articulate why. Maybe women's intuition.

I find this distasteful, he’s just died. Some respect for his family might be in order.
This is a discussion for down the line in my view.

If you think it,s ok to hit a man then why not a women? TBH I think it,s best not to hit at all. What has gender got to do with it? Anyway I did like him as bond and in Indiana Jones.

99% of the headlines are about what a legend he was.
I think 1% pointing out he was a violent women-hater is a fair balance.
Now he's a dead violent women-hater and that's fine with me.

I agree but that attitude was very common, my dm (70) still thinks it’s ok for men to hit women if they deserve it Sad

My teenage rebellion was discovering feminism

Bloody hell I had no idea he was violent! Slap the little woman if she won’t shut up 🤐
