I did in March, had wanted to for the last 20 years but didn't know what I'd do.

Now I do upholstery on Mid Century sofas and armchairs and I love it. Not quite rich beyond my wildest dreams, but I can work the hours I want to and don't have a greedy, self-important manager to deal with. I love it!

Is this daydream territory or serious? Because I don't really have an idea or intention to start one.

Daydream wise, I'd love to open a book / coffee shop - you know like how there is a Costa in the back of big waterstones? Except I imagine, because they'd both be owed by me, you could pick up anything you fancy from the bookshelves and read in the cafe, and either buy it at a discount, or, with a bigger discount donate to the cafe shelf.

The coffee shop would also be open late at night so it would be on mezzanine looking over the bookshop, with a little balcony so people could come in from the street, (and a kind of 2 entrance lift for disabled access). We could close off the bookshop bit at night, but the cafe staff would be able to fetch a book for someone if they really needed it. Occasionally, we could have music nights, or if we get lots of students in a university town perhaps we could have a guest lecturer do a talk, really light and informal though....

Maybe I've thought about this too much

I'd set up a crafting business to go round elderly homes. Bead threading, play doh, those wooden rollercoasters you move beads along, ikea-style etc. Give them something to do other than bingo or tv. It'll keep their hands and minds busy.

Granted I haven't been in one of these places for years, they might be full of fun activities for all I know Grin

Otherwise I might make busy blankets, something that goes across the lap with buttons, zips, things to pingle for those with dementia. I made one for a friend's mum and is has proved very popular with her mum and the nurses in the home! If I find a photo, I'll post it.

An olde worlde tea & sweetie shoppe.

Or a medieval themed pub that did murder mystery type events - Who Poisoned The Sheriff sort of thing. Costumes provided for participants, but no plague, rats or lice. Food based on the time.

I did some research about 20 years ago for a business idea, including pitching to potential customers. It is very niche and involves specialist knowledge in at least 3 or 4 languages as well as in another area.
I don't think it would make me fabulously wealthy (unless it went online for all), but could make a good hobby in the future as the need is most definitely still there.

I would open a coffee shop that would do the most amazing brunch dishes and cakes.

Anything that's not easy for someone to copy and anything that's not just selling stuff cheaper than everyone else (as someone else will come and sell it cheaper than you!).

But some land and allow people to bring their static caravans .
Charge a reasonable rent.
Have a field for tourers and tents
When I was turning a decent profit I’d then buy some pods

I’d have a good chunk of land for my own villa type bungalow and of course it would have an amazing view
Love countryside living
And lie waged families would get a decent discount
