Would you have a male nanny?

DH and I are talking about this and neither of us would feel 100% comfortable about it but we can’t really articulate why.

Have you ever employed the services of a male nanny? Would you?

I had. He was great. Still friend with him now. You are hiring a person not a sex. Unless you wouldn’t let your husband brother or father look after your child?

Yeah just like I had multiple male docs/consultants look at my vag when giving birth.. they’re just doing a job, hopefully they’ll do it well.

I've never had a nanny but if I did yes I'd employee a man if he was the one we gelled best with.

We've had 3 male au pairs, it's been fine, in fact the last one was the best au pair we had. I get why people are uncomfortable, let's face it, men are more likely to be sex offenders or violent than women (it's still not very likely at all, but there it is). We just made sure we got good references for all of them - two had been au pairs before, one had a worked for several years at a summer camp and had excellent recommendations.

I know it's a bit different but I've worked in anurseries which employed three men. They were great to work with and very professional.

I was thrilled when my daughter's nursery hired a guy. I think having male role models in a caring position are important. Equally happy her primary school now has at least 30-40% male teachers.

Absolutely yes. I if a male candidate and a female candidate were equal in every way (unlikely that two candidates ever are), I may well go for the male nanny candidate. Nannynick is a regular poster on the Nannies board and is really knowledgeable and impressive.

Nope. Nor a male babysitter. There is a significant risk that any male employed in such roles would sexually abuse your child

Yep. My DF ran off with our Swedish Female Nanny so my DM is kicking herself 30 years later she should've got a male nanny.

Yes,we have a male childminder (very small set up so similar ish to nanny, previously had a female nanny). Honestly I/we love him he is really really great.
