Looks like the new owners of ASDA are selling off George

George and General Merchandise colleagues were called into a meeting yesterday, couple of George colleagues came out looking upset. Has been some speculation in the media but looks like that is what is happening.

New owners have already done a deal with Greggs so probably going to get rid of the rotisserie and maybe the pizza section too. ALSO think that the alcohol section will be halved/ditched and maybe they will run a concession instore like Bargain Booze or Majestic Wines, that sort of thing.

Its a shame for the staff who may lose their jobs.

That's such a shame. George is great. And I'm sorry to hear about those who may lose their jobs.

Why get rid of those areas? I would have thought they were pretty profitable going by the Asda I shop at.

I love George, its the only reason I go to Asda. What a shame.

That is a shame I love George.
Not the same thing but it annoyed me when Tesco got rid of the clothes online but you can get them online from Next .
You would think online is the most profitable .
I like going to Asda especially at Christmas get a lot of my gifts in the store and online .

That’s shit. The only reason I go to Asda is for George and the pizzas!

Not the pizza counter!

Supermarket clothing is one of the best ideas. Pick up your school cardigans with your bread and milk... Or that item for 'dress as your favourite vegetable' they e suddenly announced....

Then there's homeware.

I literally use asda for George and their £1 punnets of grapes maybe the gluten free flour but that's occasionally and other shops sell it if they don't sell the clothing i don't see the point in going

Sorry, but George isn’t as good as TU. I feel for the staff, they’ve only just bought ASDA too. That’s awful for them. I don’t get much in ASDA a part from home stuff, pizza and George if I’m in there. I find their pricing for stuff weird and their shelf labels are awful.

What was said in the meeting? The media speculation came from the Daily Mail, so not a reliable source.

The Greggs collaboration happened months ago, they're already in some stores.

The pizza counter!!! That really does make 2020 the worst year ever!!

I think George school uniform is markedly better than TU school uniform.

How do we know people will lose their jobs? Sometimes the concessions will just take over existing staff - so the Greggs concessions may just "hire" the existing Pizza/Rotisserie staff instead of taking the time and effort to find new people.

She won't tell me directly, just has said she's not sure if she should look for a job now or later (my mum).

All the things in my first post are plausible, the rumours were going round internally before the meeting.

I personally get most of DS's clothing from George as its cheap and I'm on a budget but also am concerned about what the new owners plan to do. It looks like they'll turn everything into a concession if its not directly supermarket shopping.

They are looking at introducing DIY pizza kits, which might suggest getting rid of the pizza counter.

Well a great way to wreck Asda.
I did think at first that it was great that Asda was in British ownership.
I never thought I'd say this but I miss Walmart owning it.
So if George etc get bought by other companies & run as concessions within Asda, I hope the new owners will not decide (when some of the Asda staff are TUPEd over) to make some of the staff redundant due to business reasons.

Surely ASDA make millions/billions so why sell departments off?
Greed?
Or are Asda struggling & cost cutting needs to be made?

Oh shame, George is amongst the only places that you can find brightly coloured, no-slogan clothes for boys. Gutted!!

The new owners haven't taken over so you're spreading rumours. They're likely to do so in January and it has to get through the competition law folk first, we all know how that ended with Sainsburys merger.
Gregg concessions were in progress long before the new buyers were involved too.
Seriously a lot of people work in these stores, please don't make statements that could scare them when it's not confirmed or likely true Sad

Well thats just going to destroy Asda isn't it. I feel sorry for the staff.

I get a lot of clothes from George but lately I've mainly been shopping in Aldi. If they're getting rid of George and the deli and pizza counters then I'll just stuck to Aldi and Lidl.

That’s crazy, the George section is always really busy in my local Asda.
If that goes all it leaves in our town centre for clothing is New Look and the clothes section in Poundland.

Eh? But George and the pizza section are the best parts of Asda.
