All I’m doing is sitting around!

As my name suggests I’m now really starting to realise I’m far too sedentary.

My job is desk based, WFH at the moment and so I literally walk from my desk to the loo and into the kitchen. Just 3 or 4 taimes over the course of my working day.

I do occasionally take our dog for a walk but DH is a shift worker so tends to do it based on his schedule. Our children live at home but are almost / adult so they on appear for food. The home stays clean and tidy as I tend to do cleaning and tidying on the run and we are all quite tidy people anyway.

Poor weather this weekend has meant that I’ve literally sat down all weekend reading apart from doing a little cooking and cleaned through the house for 1.5 hours on Friday evening.

We are in Wales so lockdown means we shouldn’t go anywhere unnecessarily but my bum is actually hurting today as I’ve been so completely lazy. I’m almost 50 so if I’m not careful I’m going to become an unfit old person.

I wouldn’t be any good at running, how can I motivate myself to get out walking, is anyone else the same? I’ve gained 10lbs since March due to inactivity and using food as treats (what else is there to do?)

Same. Only without the dog.

I'm thinking of getting a bigger, heavier, apparently more effective hula hoop. It could sit quietly in the corner with the first one, being ignored ...

You just have to do it. I take whenever the moment takes me and walk round the block every day. Boring as hell and the neighbours must think there she goes, but I have to. If I can do it, anyone can!

Also I got a mini stepper. 2 mins here and there adds up.

Are you not allowed out for daily exercise? Like a PP says, you just have to do it. I've made a point of using the 90 minutes a day I've saved commuting to go out for a good walk just about every day.

If you do calls, can you do them standing up? Maybe do a few stretches and squats at the same time?

Try to get up at least once an hour for a minute or two at least, it's not good to be sitting for hours at a time.

@PoulePouletteEternellement I have one of those. It slots nicely behind the sofa Grin. Occasionally I pretend I don't live in a flat and have a whirl with it. One day...when I'm 80, I will have a garden then I can properly learn to hula hoop Grin

Get a smart watch (Fitbit or similar). Mine buzzes every hour if I haven't done at least 250 steps. It tracks how active I am through the day so works well as a reminder.

Have you thought about doing Couch to 5k?

Honestly? Just walk the dog. I rack up 10000 steps a day on dog walking

After my dog died I hated walking on my own. Then I bought a pair of wireless earphones and started walking to music. It was a game changer. I do an hour most days at as fast a pace as I can manage so that I’m working up a sweat and I feel so much better for it. I’ve also invested in a treadmill for this winter for days when the weather is just too awful - it’s not the same as being out in the fresh air but I find now that I really miss having had the exercise if I don’t get out.

Smae here. I find excuses to move. Walk to get DS from school. Lunchtime walk with DH. Try and run around as much as possible with the kids at weekend. Use the stairs as much as possible.

Get out with the dog.
Get yourself a Nintendo Switch and play games instead of eating.
Read. Write. Watch telly. Talk to your friends. Make something. Paint. Learn a language. Start a vegetable garden. Masturbate furiously.

You know, all the advice you'd give to a teenager who says "I'm boooooooored".

Definitely get a new routine with the dog. If mine are anything to go by they won’t mind more walks even if your partner still takes him too.

I bought an exercise bike, and do between 10 and 20k every day, generally watching telly. An hour's viewing racks up 20k (assuming I don't stop, sometimes it takes me two or three episodes of something to get to 20k Blush).

Why let the weather dictate your day?

Im also in Wales and if I stayed in because of rain id never go out.

Get if your arse and go for a walk!
