Dishwasher, I can live without

Haven’t had one since I was a teenager living in my mums home

A tumble dryer however, I cannot life without.

Mine broke a few weeks ago and it was nightmare getting clothes dry.

Luckily we have a new one now

If I can only choose one, I think the fridge. Ours broke once and we had to manage without for a couple of weeks. It was an absolute nightmare.

If we’re talking non-key appliances, I’d go for my blender. Use it every day.

I'm like you, we have a dishwasher but I couldn't care less about it. Ten years ago, ours broke and we went without for 5 years, never missed it. When my parents realised they surprised us with a new one, even though I didn't want it, and even though we could have easily paid for it. They thought we were mad not to have one.

My tumble dryer you would have to pry out of my cold, dead hands. I have never and will never be without one.

I don’t have a tumble drier, I can’t imagine needing one tbh. But then, we have a extra spare bedroom and it’s been such a luxury to use that for laundry.

I've twice replaced worn out / broken dishwashers asap.

Tumble drier is about 18 years old and used infrequently. Wasn't vented last winter while kitchen was being refitted and I debated just getting rid of it, but kept it and have used it 2 or 3 times this year.

Most other major appliances get used frequently (fridge, freezer, oven, microwave).
Robovac goes everyday, cordless vac gets used once or twice a week.
Kettle & toaster used daily.
Food processor, bread maker, sandwich toastie maker, nutribullet get used most weeks.
Candy floss machine (ds2 had as a present), pie maker (a prize), doughnut maker (ex-H brought it as a present), ice cream maker are rarely used.

Carpet washer, 3 kids 4 cats use it at least weekly

Fridge. I don’t have a tumble dryer either.
When we moved into our first house after getting married all we had in the kitchen was a sink unit & a hand me down table from my mum. It was a new build but back in the day when they didn’t come with fitted kitchens, central heating, nothing but a bathroom suite & a kitchen sink unit. We bought a cooker but managed without even a fridge for six months till we’d saved enough. Next was a Baby Burco boiler for nappies when DS came along.

The dishwasher is not the most important to us but ours broke just before lockdown and I cannot tell you how much more time I felt was spent in the kitchen each day. Washing up by hand everything just felt like such a chore and I was very happy when it was fixed 3 months later.

However the main one I couldn't do without is the fridge/ freezer, very very closely followed by the washing machines

I suspect if we didn't have a dishwasher, we probably just wouldn't cook. I think knowing you have to wash up a load of gunked up stuff afterwards completely takes the joy out of the eating. We'd end up living on ready meals, so probably the dishwasher.

Fridge, washing machine, hob, oven, boiler, shower, and dishwasher. It’s a pain if any of them go.

Tumble dryer I’ve not had for years and don’t feel the need and seldom used it so got rid. I always dry clothes in rhe soare room with a dehumidifier, they are alway dry the next day, sometimes that day if rhe heating is on too.

On the technology side, WiFi, snd the tv, phone, iPad etc.

I could live without the micro wave, it’s convenient but when the last one broke it didn’t bother me that much till I replaced it

Could manage without a cooker (love salads, often have cold meals even in winter) or microwave. Could even manage without a washing machine although I use mine a lot....but I could wash everything by hand at a pinch. But definitely the tumble dryer, and the fridge/freezer for all my food.

Of the non essential appliances, there are 2 I would replace immediately if they broke. One is my coffee machine. It’s a decent bean to cup one, and a couple of lattes in the morning set me up in a way that instant coffee just doesn’t. Plus I’ve saved loads not buying coffees out anymore.

The other is my portable air con. I’ve never been good with heat but peri menopause has made it even more valuable to me. If I wake up boiling in the night I switch that on for an hour and it gives me so much relief. During hot days I just camp in my room with it running all day/night!

I have a spin dryer too, it gets a pint of water out of every wash before the tumble drier so the electric bills definitely less on those days.

Dishwasher. I have a small kitchen and I just don't like seeing a mess after cooking. DH is doing the dishes (well, the ones we don't put in a dishwasher) but that's just a handful.

I could live without a tumble dryer, Only towels and bedding goes in there anyway unless it is an emergency. Saying that, it is nice to have it in winter when drying outside can be difficult. But since I work from home I have more control about timing.

Definitely my vacuum. I run it every two hours at least. I question everyday why I chose a black carpet.

I’m torn between the dishwasher and the tumble drier but on balance I think the tumble drier just wins. I think it’s because although it gathers dust for about 8 months of the year, when it works it works hard and I couldn’t do with out it. Although the dishwasher works all year round I can (grudgingly) wash up myself 😂

A few years back our dishwasher and dryer broke in the same week.
We ordered a new dishwasher within a day, still haven't replaced the dryer.
