After you've definitely decided but before you start house hunting. People will be more upset if you've been keeping it a secret.

I would tell them when I knew it was serious so they had time to adjust and could be part of the ups and downs of moving. I don't think a last minute surprise is the way to go.

I'm in this exact position right now
I live within 20 mins of all 5 adult children and grandchildren.

In the new year I'm looking to move a 4 hour drive away.
I am absolutely dreading telling 3 of my children.
I already feel like I've left it too late.

I only moved here in Feb, and they keep asking when I'm doing this or that to the house, and I just can't bring myself to say. :-(

My advice would be do it asap OP

I would tell them now that you've been thinking about it rather than when you've decided imo. I'd rather be warned about it

When it's confirmed.

I would talk to people about it as you are thinking about it. I think it's weird to keep it a secret. I moved countries (11 hour flight from my family). They knew about it as soon as I was even pondering it, which was years before it happened.

We're looking to move soon and it's only about 1.5-2 hours away, but people have known that for probably 2-3 years now already and we only started looking at the start of the year.

I will say though, it's gotten annoying with people constantly asking about it (we had a house purchase fall through due to vendors pulling out after lockdown) and constantly having to explain that we're hoping it happens soon. But it would feel odd to have kept it a secret until the last minute.

As soon as it's a possibility, it would seem weird not to mention it.

I would mention it as soon as I started thinking about it, but that’s because I’m incapable of keeping a secret and like to talk things through with people.

Once the decision was made. I've actually done this a fair bit over the years.

I suppose the kids y reason for not saying until it’s 100percent Certain would be to avoid upsetting anyone then not going ?

I’ve told One friend so far who only said, the tourist must get on the locals nerves and that it will be heaving and crowded in the summer
