What are your recurring dreams?

I have two regular themes that come up -

- I'm at home (in the family home I grew up in, not my current family home) and there's hundreds of unwanted guests. As I manage to get one room clear I go into another room and there's just so many more. It's a real stress and anxiety and I can't get anyone to leave.

- I'm drink driving, usually really struggling to control the vehicle and then being caught and so full of guilt and shame.

Both dreams seem to have the themes of alcohol and being out of control. Whenever I have either dream I wake up SO relieved they're not true.
I've also had a similar one, though not as frequent, that I'm drunk and cheat on DH. Again, a very stressful and anxiety causing situation and again, so grateful when I wake up and know its not true.

I am a bit of a control freak in real life and all these have a theme of being out of control - although I don't necessarily notice these anxieties in my waking life.

They're also all linked to alcohol - I have had a bad relationship with binge drinking in the past, although not for a long time now.

What are your recurring dreams/themes and where do you think they stem from?

Every now and then I dream that I am pregnant.

I do not have children. I do not want children.

My mind is a strange thing!

HUCKMUCK Wed 07-Oct-20 07:36:49

That’s so interesting that you can attribute the themes to your life.

My two main ones are

Trying to dial a phone number or tap in a PIN and just keep getting it wrong. I am often looking at the number written down but I just keep mixing up the digits or missing the numbers.

Second is car parks! I am either driving the wrong way round one, can’t find the exit or walking round looking for my car.

I think the first one is something to do with me not feeling I am communicating well. Nothing specific in real life springs to mind but I did grow up I a family that never talks about feelings so I’m sure that’s part of it.

No idea about the car park one!

I am at an outdoor camping festival but we are camping inside a huge marquee, a tent in a tent so to speak. The woman my husband left me for 22 years ago pitches up right next door, I am furious and try to find a way to move but can't because all the space is now gone. I have lots of dreams about tents.

I interpret this as something is going on for me which feels INTENSE and I'm feeling crowded or there is too much to cope with and my feelings are not being taken account of.

Seeing a plane crash in the distance. I have these dreams probably every week and everytime I have one I say this one is definitely not a dream this is real.

Being on a plane that is struggling to take off, a lot of the time it's just taxiing (?) through the streets.

Finding out I'm pregnant and about to give birth.

Being pregnant and unable to feel the baby move.

I also have the one about being unable to dial a phone number or write a text message. It is so frustrating.

Mxflamingnoravera Wed 07-Oct-20 07:43:14

I have the phone one loads! I think it's about feeling out of control and desperate to get control back by trying to seek help but cannot get access to the help I need.

In the pregnancy dreams are you happy you're pregnant, or anxious about it as you don't want children?

HUCKMUCK

They also sound like a kind of 'out of control' theme too, and interesting you link the first to communication as well when you say you didn't feel your family were good at communicating.

Isn't it amazing that even if we aren't aware of things we're carrying around day to day, our minds are likely still processing it all!

Both actually!

I also have the aircraft taxiing or flying through the streets of a city too! Our dreams are not unique clearly. But I suspect how we interpret them is different.

PolloDePrimavera Wed 07-Oct-20 07:46:50

I used to have one in my 20s and it was very regular. I'm wondering if someone could explain it?! I'd be aware that there was someone trying to kill me and I would know who it was (never anyone I knew IRL). I would have a weapon, usually a gun, but when I tried to use it, it just wouldn't kill my potential attacker and they would keep coming.

bearlyactive Wed 07-Oct-20 07:47:04

Oh and another one I have now and again is that I'm trying to dial 999 or 111 and can't do it. Either I get cut off or I dial four 9s or four 1s. Ironically, the three times I've had to call 999/111 this year, I've managed it fine despite 111's four-minute lecture about Coronavirus before you can speak to someone

Greenleaf21 Wed 07-Oct-20 07:49:55

😂 I've always had one about needing to go to the toilet but the public toilets are always really dirty and I can't go. This has been happening ever since I can remember.

Packing. I am trying to pack for a flight and have no time. I have to pack everyone's cases and they've left stuff literally all over the place. If do manage to pack everything in the room, I find there is another room also full of stuff, and it is hopeless. Have been having this dream now for about 30 years. I am a self confessed control freak, but I DON'T actually pack my family's cases in real life.....

Mine sometimes flies through the town too. Often stopping at traffic lightshmm.

I'm at my old childhood home getting ready for school and I can't find my skirt. I can see the other pupils walking by going to school and the clock getting closer to 9am and I am in a total state of panic because I'm going to be late. Weird thing is I was never late for school in real life. Not once.

Another is I'm on a plane that is sort of crashing but doesn't reach the ground and has to fly very low avoiding buildings.

I have a nightmare about a possed garden gnome who is trying to kill me. I know it sounds ridiculous but this dream in genuinely terrifying 😂

WildRosie Wed 07-Oct-20 08:07:56

I get the unable-to-dial-a-phone-number dream quite a lot. My more frequent ones are:

Our old dentists surgery. It looks different every time but is unmistakable. I hated the place when I was a bairn.

Schofield's department store in Leeds. I must have spent a lot of time there years ago.

Pie shops and bakeries on the main road near my family home. There are none!

The control tower ar my local airport. Like the dentist dream, always different but no doubt as to its identity.

Driving a bus or other large vehicle, either from the passenger seat or otherwise impractical position, and having great difficulty. Usually going too fast as well.

At this time of year, wild mushrooms and fungi.

A common theme for many of my dreams is semi-darkness, whether indoors or out.

WiseUpJanetWeiss Wed 07-Oct-20 08:12:14

I have several recurring themes

- being pregnant, about which I’m astonished and annoyed (recent addition since menopause)

- not being able to make a phone work properly because it has too many numbers and lots of letters. I’ve had this one since before Blackberrys existed.

- taking a shower an then realising the shower is just over carpet and there’s no drain

- dinosaurs (usually a T rex, but sometimes other kinds) loose in the city (Leeds, near the LGI confused ) and I have to hide.

- light switches not working.

pollylocketpickedapocket Wed 07-Oct-20 08:14:06

I dream my dd has gone missing, horrendous it is.

Thirty2andBlue Wed 07-Oct-20 08:22:04

I have an awful dream where I'm chewing gum, and when I try to spit it out it goes all stringy and it's stuck in my throat. I have to keep pulling and pulling at the gum. I can physically feel that sensation in my dreams and it makes me gip envyenvyenvy I never chew gum IRL.

I don't know what it means, it happens so randomly.

FamilyOfAliens Wed 07-Oct-20 08:26:08

I have the place crash ones but the plane is always really close and massive and covers the whole sky.

But my most frequent ones involve finding loads of kittens which is initially great but then I find they’re everywhere and I can’t collect them all up and it’s really distressing because I think I’ve missed some.

That chewing gum one sounds awful.

I have this too! Except it's not chewing gum it's just stringy stuff stuck in my throat as if it's attached and I just keep pulling and pulling it's never ending. Same as you I can feel the sensation in my dream.

Similar to your first 2 OP - out of control driving and trying to eject people from my house that I don't want there.

Another one I used to have a lot was dream where I have to pass through a terminal with concealed narcotics, but get to the airport and realise I've forgotten my passport, yet still blag my way through.

Also one where I'm going through an underground tunnel which gets narrower and narrower and filled with grey sludge, until I'm crawling on my stomach and mouth filling with the disgusting sludge.

These dreams would all be accompanied by the most awful dread and I would dream them a lot. Not anymore though, so I suspect I may have worked through whatever it was.

Teeth falling out

Realising I have no shoes on at times it would be really inappropriate - hoping no one will notice

Realising I’ve got a gcse (normally maths) very soon and had forgotten to study

Trying to get to an airport & bring really late / panicked

My being late for flight recurrent dreams are very like this but it’s normally my own stuff that is everywhere. Or I leave bags elsewhere when I’m in a cab. Uuugh horrible

DrGachet Wed 07-Oct-20 09:08:47

Ooh, just remembered another one - I'd become so weak that I'd collapse on the street and try to call for help, but only manage to muster up a whisper.
