Job offer advice

I've been offered a new job and not sure whether to accept. The interview process was good, and good salary, but negotiating salary and job title has left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. It's a really interesting role at a start up company, and offers the chance to manage multiple projects at once, but no line management. I worry a bit about what I will do in terms of career development in the future without any obvious leadership position.

If this was the only thing on offer, I would accept, but a position is soon going to be advertised at work - Team leader of the team I currently work in. I would be managing aspects of multiple projects at a time, as well as a handful of people. I am excited about the prospect of a team leader position, but equally a bit concerned about managing coworkers who are currently my peers. I have been encouraged to apply and management have basically indicated that I would get the job, without saying as much, however there's never any guarantee.

Would love to hear any thoughts.

Bird in hand better than 10 in a bush. You could always come back for a higher position where you are now.. seems the dynamics shift once you have left somewhere and came back later.

I agree bird in the hand, you could always come back to your current employer for a higher-up role.

Why did you have to negotiate the job title? Does it affect what you will be doing?

I was also confused about having to negotiate the job title. They admitted the role was the same, just said there would be some training to get up to speed, hence the lower job title. However, they admitted anyone would need the same training so not sure why they advertised it with a higher title in the first place. It's not really the point of my post anyway.

I don't think I would be able to come back to my current employer in the future. It's a big employer, but small and remote team. Staff turnover is very low. It's definitely not something I could count on.

I don’t think I’d join a start up right now, they often fail in the first year or so. How secure would your role be at the start up?

But you've just said there's going to be a new Team Leader position?

I'd be wary of a start up business in this economy.

I'd almost definitely stay put.

What are your thoughts today?

I still think a start up is too risky in this economy unless you can afford not to work if it all goes arse up.

@MJMG2015 I'm not sure but I need to decide within the next couple of days, and risk just staying in my current job if I decline the one with the start up. The risk associated with the start up is a good point, but I think they're ok for a least a year with the funding they have got, and to be honest my current employer has been hit hard by COVID, so not sure which one is worse atm.

How old are you and what financial dependents/commitments do you have? Makes a big difference to the risk you can take.

Mid-late 30s. We can live off DH's salary for mortgage, food, bills etc, but for additional things like savings, childcare, holidays, we would need my salary as well. However, I'm not overly worried about this. There are quite a lot of jobs constantly advertised that are the same as my current role. These two new opportunities, however, are quite rare.

I think at the moment, i feel like i want the team leader job, despite the fact that it will be more stressful and busy than the other, because it will be a better career move.

The main issue is that I'm worried that I might not get it, and obviously I need to make a decision on the start up job now really.

You said management indicated you'd get the job. Is there someone you could talk to about the situation you're in?

I'd let your management know what's happening. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want. But also don't let them fob you off.
