So I just tried halloumi for the first time...

It was those chilli halloumi kebabs from M&S.... it was the saltiest thing I’ve ever put in my mouth! I could only manage one but stupidly cooked all 4! Under the grill for 7-11 minutes as instructed, turning regularly.
So what do I do with the other 3? Stick em in the fridge for tomorrow? Can they be eaten cold?
Can’t imagine they’d be very nice cold. Can they be reheated?

I know this is a stupid post but... I’m confused. I just don’t know what to think? Did I like it? Did I not? I just don’t know.
I was expecting some sort of delicious mozzarella type thing... but it was salty and, well, very squeaky.

It’s known as squeaky cheese in our house! I’d risk reheating.

I don't understand halloumi.

I mean, what's with the squeaky rubberised weirdness and everything?

This is not food.

Yes halloumi is salty! You can eat it cold but I suppose it depends how well cooked they are. I griddle them until there’s a crispy crust. Then I wrestle DS for the last slice.

But yes - salty as anything but bloody lovely. We call it ‘squeaky cheese’ (it squeaks on your teeth when you eat it!)

It is squeaky.
It's lovely with watermelon and mint

Or roasted mediterranean veg

Or a greek salad instead of feta.

All of those will offset the saltiness

You can microwave it and it taste like it’s just been cooked. I love it but it is very very salty!

It's very salty squeaky

But it's one of those foods like olives, capers and coffee that once you get a taste for the bastard you're in it forever

Welcome to the world of halloumi. I don’t know who invented it but it’s one of the more useless foodstuffs out there.

Maybe cut it up into a salad? Or bin it and take it as one of life’s lessons.

I used to be a bit obsessed with halloumi but these days just find it too salty.

I like it. Ate tons of the stuff in Cyprus on holiday. My mother, same. Rest of the family: Wiiiiiiide berth. It's like eating polystyrene.

I like it too, I saw a tip on Instagram a while ago to soak it in boiling water before you cook it, it's a lot more fluffy that way!

Slice, toss in flour, toss in hot olive oil until crispy, add juice of a lime, 1/2 tap lazy garlic, tbs of crushed capers. Serve with rocket and buttered rye bread. Or with lamb kebabs, pitta, tsatziki and Greek Salad.

Feeling really sad we have just had chicken pasta bake Smile

love it cold! But with hummus and a pitta 😋 they're better grilled

I’ll have it!

It’s not squeaky when grilled or dry fried so it is nearly part- blackened.
Lovely on salad.
As or part of skewers.
Actually surprisingly good in wraps with eg cucumbers.

I’ve never eaten it raw and never experienced any squeakiness. It is made for flame !!!

Lovely with sweet chilli sauce 😍

Ah... perhaps I should’ve pan fried it rather than grilled? I kinda liked it... I think. I adore salt and savoury food... but honest to god, it was saltier than sea water.
Hmm... I shall stick them in the fridge and eye them up suspiciously tomorrow.
The jury is still out atm.

It's gorgeous done on a bbq. It's not a cheese I eat raw.

You can boil it if you buy a packet rather than burgers - and then roll it out with a rolling pin - then fry it. Much less salty and a different texture. I love it either way.

I love halloumi but I don't think it's supposed to be overly salty, just a nice salty. Maybe it was the marinade?

Have two large packets in my fridge but I have eaten already. Kinda wish I hadn’t.
