First of all this isn’t a stealth boast, it’s a definite question I need a sense check on please, I realise I am lucky.
I ordered a new car in April, a BMW, my first ever brand new car and only affordable because they were desperate to sell some cars in lockdown ( I was looking for a second hand and this came in cheaper on the finance). To be clear it’s a PCP lease car - not purchase
For the first time ever ( I am in my 50s) I got to pick a colour, interior trim, extras etc
At the time of purchase the branch was closed, so everything was done online and by phone and I hadn’t test driven car, no signed paperwork. A particular part of the conversation / agreement ( verbal) was I could still back out if the deal prior to the finance agreement being signed if I didn’t like the car when it arrived.
I waited 4 months for the car to arrive (which they had told me about) and they called me last week to say it had arrived. I asked to go to see it to test drive it before the collection day, they were a bit funny about it but I made it clear that I hadn’t seen it and was not going to buy it if I didn’t like it ( as we had agreed).
So, I went today, the car was driven out for me and it was not as I had ordered - correct colour but the interior trim was a completely different colour to the one I had chosen.
I stated this straight away ( it was very obvious - it was not a matter of shades of grey being different) and they were a bit panicked, ran inside the showroom to check and then came out to confirm that yes, it’s not-the one I ordered. The sales manager gave a weak apology said they didn’t know that it was the wrong colour but perhaps BMW have a supplier chain issue with the interior fabrics so sent this, he claimed they hadnt been advised of this.
So, I said I needed to think about it, it sounds shallow, but it really isn’t what I wanted and I was so disapppointed.
They said I have 3 choices- take this car, we will order you another car to your specification and it will take 4 months or you can walk away. So I asked for the rest of day to decide.
I called back this evening after much deliberation and told them, no I don’t want the car on their forecourt- I would like the car I ordered please.
The sales manager was extremely short with me, the whole call lasted no more than 30 seconds and he huffily told me he would order me another car, rang off. No apology, no ‘ we understand it’s not what you ordered ‘ , just basically quite shitty with me.
Have I done anything wrong here?
I was so upset about the way they treated me, I am now wondering whether I should just call them in the morning and say cancel the order. It’s really taken the shine off my excitement.
What would you do? Just realised I am in chat not WWYD - sorry.
