How do you store your dried herbs and spices?

I’m trying to organise my pantry, which is basically a small room (no windows) off my kitchen. There is a lot in there, including a 6 foot freezer, a wine fridge and lots of recycling, but I also keep lots of food and drinks in there so I need the space to work well.

I am inspired by The Home Edit on Netflix, but whenever they seem to organise a pantry, it doesn’t include any dried herbs and spices!

At the moment, I have three crates which are choc full, sitting on the shelves. I think I probably have 40 or so, all in different sizes jars or boxes as I’ve bought own brands in whatever supermarket I’ve been to.

What works well for you in terms of space saving and organising?

I have a lot of indian spices and I use old jars Of coffee or jam, that I wash and sterilise to store them. I put mine on a pull out shelf on the side of the cooker so I use the same size jars for my everyday spices. The others are in a drawer and labelled on the top with chalk labels.

You can get various size jars from ikea or amazon too.

A pull out shelf and a deep drawer sounds fantastic. I’d love that. Maybe when we redo the kitchen!

Absolutely you should. Mines only a small one under the counter but sil has a full length one. I just didn’t have the space for it.

I have a large spice rack attached to the inside of a kitchen cupboard door.

Mine are in a pan drawer under the hob.
I'd love a pantry though Envy

I haven't done it yet but I'm going to get magnetic storage pots and a metal noticeboard to magnet them to. (If I had a suitable fridge/freezer I'd stick 'em to that)

I've got a couple of these metal shelves. Had the big one on top then had to get the smaller one a few weeks ago. Everything arranged alphabetically as I ended up with loads of duplicates when I couldnt find stuff but I also had to split the herbs and spices a la supermarket because the smaller shelves in the bottom don't take the height of the spice jars for some annoying reason Hmm

I used to have all sorts of lovely jars and bottles. But now I have a large plastic box with a tight fitting lid and it lives in a dark cupboard.

All spices and herbs have lasted far better than they used to.

I have them all in a drawer. The Sainsbury's jars are just the right height for the drawer and look v neat, have the names on the tops, and so I can fit loads in a small standard drawer.

Didn't need a designer shelf which is good because I forgot to put one in the new kitchen.

We have a pantry but store herbs and spices in a drawer alongside the oven as they're used frequently. We have an ikea insert so they're displayed on their sides with labels facing up. We have some bigger jars (old douwe egberts jars) for storing larger quantities which we refill from which are in the pantry.

I like to organise mine in A-Z In a deep drawer, except for a few which I use so commonly that I have put them at the front and can reach for the instinctively.
I always decant the last scraps of one into the replacement. I keep the jars for my own spice mixes.
If I were you, I’d have a clear out and try and use up the last remnants of any jars before I did any organising.

I use the plastic tubs that grapes come in to put mine in - e.g I have one for baking spices, one for curry spices, one for herbs.
They are on a shelf and I just pull out the relevant one.. much easier to find the right one than before.

The plastic tubs that grapes come in are also very handy for storing Schwartz seasoning packets

I have a shallow cupboard on the wall by the cooker. Oils and vinegars on bottom shelf, jars of lazy garlic etc on shelf above and herbs and spices on top shelf.

We have hidden drawers in the base unit. You can see what I mean in the shelves and drawers picture here:

www.ikea.com/gb/en/cat/interior-fittings-24255/

All the spices are in small tins in the little drawer under the worktop.

We have the same as @soloula but on a wall next to the cooker

They are probably not available anymore, but I keep spices in old CD storage boxes from IKEA - wooden cube storage boxes with drawers that pull out.

Thanks for the responses. I think the wall mounted racks would work well for me but the only space I have for them is on the back of the pantry door. This would be amazing as it would take them off the shelves and free up that space. But the door has panels and I don’t think the racks would lie flat and I am concerned that they’d fall down and take all my herbs and spices with them!
