IBS - low fibre?

pinky987 · 13/09/2020 19:10

I have been told by my dietician to increase fibre to help resolve my ibs symptoms however I am finding the more I cut out fruit and veg and reduce my fibre then better I am getting.

Does anyone else eat low fibre to help ibs?

Look at the FODMAP diet and soluble and insoluble fibre.

Has your dietician mentioned the low fodmap diet? This is an elimination diet that you should do with support from a dietician and then you can start introducing foods.

Look at Monash - it's strict and you follow the elimination of the FODMAPs for at least 6-8 weeks you then start reintroducing foods to see what is causing you problems

Sorry should have mentioned I have been following the lowfodmap diet now for 8 weeks. I have seen symptoms improve after I discovered eating a banana daily was causing me problems however whilst my bowel movements are better I am still having a lot wind and gurgling stomach noises.

I had IBS for years but it was a long time ago now. I found eating fibre made it worse. I had a pretty carb intense diet for a while but it was so bad that at that point that any food was better than none. Once I had it uncontrollably I slowly reintroduced certain veg and fruit. I also cut out fat and dairy. I eat lots of fruit and veg now but I still avoid high fat food like butter and cheese. Definitely speak to a health professional again. And good luck I know how awful it can be.

That should say under control not uncontrollably.

Same here. Mine is much worse with fibre. Bananas have been off the list for years after a particularly bad episode. I can't eat any cereal or tolerate some breads (Hovis)

Every time I speak to the dietician I am told to increase fibre so I know she won’t agree with trying low fibre but I have to do something as the wind is quite painful and constant everyday.

@flatpack1 I am eating gluten free cornflakes which my dietitian has advised is ok however when I spoke to a gastroenterologist they said not to eat cereals so unsure whether to stop eating these as well.

Long time IBS sufferer here - I found that increasing fibre worsened my symptoms dramatically. I followed a low fibre diet for a long time. Not as bad for me these days.

Currently in reintroduction phase of Low fodmap I already know I'm going to stay gluten free and probably lactose low.

Did you eliminate for low fodmap and then start re-introducing - I know I can't tolerate cereals/grains - wheat etc very well at all

I am still in the elimination phase and have not started reintroducing yet. The gluten free cornflakes are lowfodmap which is why I have been eating these.

I have not yet had enough relief from symptoms to reintroduce however I am speaking to my dietician this week about this.

I spoke to the dietitian today who has again told me to increase fibre and that I will not improve without it.
