Four teachers have died of Covid-19 in USA

The Times is running this sad story today. They make the point that we are just weeks into the new academic year.

These teachers were not all in the same state so difficult to see how this can be written off as specific to a set of circumstances.

I think we'll look back on what we're asking teachers to do, without protective equipment or social distancing, and feel ashamed of the way they were shamed and harassed to do their job in these conditions.

Have they died because they are teachers, or are they people who died who just happen to be teachers?

It’s very early in the new term. They may not have even caught it in the school, it takes weeks to move through to hospitalisation, and critical care

And? How many cleaners, construction workers, factory workers, carers and taxi drivers have died? Or is it only teachers who matter?

4 is nothing out of the millions of teachers. And did they get it in school or elsewhere? You don't know. They don't spend their whole lives in school after all.

Teachers ( and everyone) die everyday from a whole host of contagious illnesses ( and non contagious illnesses)
So its only important if it’s Covid?
Please tell us how many have sued from flu/pneumonia/sepsis / and anything else

Teachers have died here, they don't have some super human quality that makes them immune from illness, were you exepecting teachers to have a 100% survival rate?

And 7,000 healthcare workers have died. Every death is absolutely tragic but your post is unnecessary.
Millions of key workers have had to enter outside of their comfort zone during this pandemic, others have lost their jobs. Professions like carers are facing the biggest challenges of being unable to distance, in the biggest outbreak areas, mostly with inadequate PPE for little over minimum wage and zero hour contracts.

There are huge scandals for bad treatment, decisions and actions during coronavirus and It’s certainly not specific to teachers.

how about all the health workers that have died or the bus drivers or the supermarket workers? all of these have contact with the public and many of them have died. without an intensive study of all the people that have died, track and trace to how they caught it we cant and shouldnt be going around saying inflammatory statements like 3 teachers have died!! its like me saying my friend is an office worker and died of cancer implying the office work was why she got cancer.

Sorry for the DM link but this gives details and it’s pretty clear that in these 4 cases it was not caught at school. One caught it from somebody at a church meeting, two were ill before schools had even returned, one was only in for a teacher training day.

Teachers will catch it at school, I’m not disputing that, but these cases are not examples of that happening.

One of the saddest (28 years old) went into school for a teacher day that was her last day - she actually never managed to teach

Another died during the first week of classes but was self quarantining when school began

Another got it after having contact at a church meeting

Another was in school preparing before she got it but actually had no contact

As sad as it is, 4 is a tiny number out of a population of 300 million.

Some people are going to die of this virus. Some will be teachers. Some will be supermarket workers, some will be bus drivers, some will be factory workers, some will be hospital staff. No occupation is 100% safe.

The number of teachers dead from covid is meaningless without context. Even more meaningless (if such a thing is possible) without being able to trace the source of the viral infection to school.

Given that you're talking about the US I'd say that any teacher there is more likely to die as a result of being shot by one of their students.

In 2018 113 people were killed or injured in US school shootings. That would worry me far more.

They could have caught it anywhere from family , the pub ,at a restaurant lots of bus drivers, taxi drivers, cleaners, insert any profession have died of covid. Teachers are at no greater risk than any one else out working.

The current US Covid death toll is edging towards 200,000. It would be pretty amazing if it didn't include any teachers.

Sweden (which kept is schools open throughout) found that the teachers were no more likely to die or become seriously ill than people working in othet professions

I personally don't think 'we' will be thinking what you are thinking- look at Sweden for instance.

Sad that anyone dies from something preventable for sure BUT you could read it as only 4 teachers have died of Covid -19 v other illnesses and it's a much safer profession than x others..Unless you have some kind of comparator it's pointless and not helpful.

There other things to be concerned about and I am grateful to all teachers and educators and indeed anyone working with children or the public but you can't even prove where these teachers picked it up from. Just unhelpful thinking and no useful suggestions.

The context is those with obesity and those overweight were at a significant increased risk of suffering serious complications of COVID-19
