Food for weekend with no kids

Mawi · 10/09/2020 13:02

I have planned a weekend away for me & DH with no DC. I know it could all go tits up but at the moment we are going away for 2 days without DC to a cottage by the sea.

I need ideas for food. I want to buy/make food that is indulgent and not something that we usually have on the family meal plan.

We just want to hide away on our own and walk on the beach and indulge ourselves a bit.

Sil (Dh sis) died unexpectedly during lockdown and we could not mourn or process properly so it really is about being kind and gentle with ourselves and a bit of spoiling because sometimes you just need it.

Any wonderful ideas for me please.

My treat food is Kleftico from waitrose, really indulgent. Have it with a few rosemary potatoes, veg, nice wine.
Hope you have a lovely time.

My go to treaty dinner is steak with homemade chips, or pan-fried duck breast with dauphinoise potatoes (google Jamie's quick dauinoise, they're delish).

Enjoy your weekend!

I’d go with M&s or waitrose dine in for 2. With a few nice side dishes and extras.

Easy, convenient, not much prep and time in the kitchen, but still good food.

Go to M&S - get the dine in for £12 or whatever it is now, then some picky bits from the deli range and some of the little pots of various salads. nice bread, some cheese and cold meats, some nice juices and some par bake pastries, some nice chocolate/

My ds doesn't like fish or very spicy food so I tend to choose those when he isn't around.

Oysters? Moroccan or Thai?

I’ve got a hankering for coq au vin with mash so that! Pre-cook the chicken and take it down frozen with some frozen mash, maybe serve with some fresh broccolini. Or whatever those posh broccolis are called.

Cheese and crackers for lunches and snacks.

Wine and your chosen soft beverage - I’m not classy I’d have Pepsi.

Sorry for your loss. Hope the weekend goes well.

Make lamb shanks! Quite easy as you just stick in the oven with root vegetable for several hours.

When I'm eating meat, I usually do filet mignon, with a mushroom/Parmesan sauce, roast potatoes with Yorkshire pudding and sautéed asparagus.

Or if I'm feeling really hungry, I do a full on roast.

Hope you have a lovely time. Can you go via a Cook? Frozen so they're happy en route and v good quality. Seafood is a good bet by the sea Wink and may be something you don't enjoy with little dc.

Baked feta drizzled with olive oil, oregano and flaked chillis. Dig at it with tasty bread.

Minus the deli meat (vegetarian) that sounds perfect.

OH thank you all sooooo much. My mouth is watering reading them all. So many months of family dinners, I cannot wait to eat proper grown up food without having to worry and make something else for the dc just incase.

I was thinking of doing a picky breakfast type thing and go watch the sunrise on the beach (weather permitting) and have breakfast.

Have a lovely time OP. I 2nd/3rd/4th... take it easy and get in something quality half done for you and relax. Unless you really enjoy cooking to relax - in that case go for something you wouldnt have with the kids, not because they are fussy, but maybe because they wouldnrt appreciate the effort. My two wolf down a nice steak the same as cheapo pasta, so the effort is wasted!
We'd have a big pan of king prawns with a tonne of butter and garlic.
Fillet steak with a slow baked jacket or hasselback potato, mushrooms for me a lovely big beef tomato and some homemade onion rings. We'd also do a few different sauces, I like blue other half pepper. A shit load of some kind of green veg.
And something chocolatey for pud.
Classic :)

cross post, sunrise on the beach sounds luuuuurvly. For this i would want freshly baked pastries (honestly... you can't beat iceland's frozen pain au chocolat & croissants!) and a flask or smart* coffee. Bliss.

  • add rum or liquer of choice ;)

You could buy a go fresh box, they normally have an offer for 50% off the first box which would mean 3 meals for 2 would be £15.

If you have a Waitrose there's a range called scratch - everything you need is in the packet and they are tasty. Alternatively (similar and cheaper) Aldi and Lidl both do stir fry chicken already prepared with veg, just add a microwave rice packet and maybe spring rolls.

If you want indulgent and don't mind packing up ingredients try this: 1 pkt whole grain and quinoa microwave rice, 3-4 spring onions, zest and juice 1 lemon, pkt pomegranate seeds, small pkt coriander chopped, jarred peppers sliced, handful of shelled pistachios. Serve with lamb chops, lamb koftas, or fried halloumi and green salad. All should be suited to holiday cottage equipment, aka don't need much.

Sorry for your loss, taking time out is really important, take care Thanks
