Is it
Mask to be worn pass this point
Or
Mask to be worn past this point
Or
Mask to be worn passed this point

I think it's the first sentence.

Please help!

Mask to be worn past this point

It's 2, past this point

The second. "Pass" and "passed" are both verbs whereas "past" is a preposition of place, just like "beyond."

Oh dear, I need to brush up on my grammar!

You're saying a mask must be worn beyond this point, past is instead of beyond.

If you were saying a mask was to be worn in order to pass this point then pass would be correct. However if this were the case, it is also implied that a mark is only to be worn in order to pass this point. Once beyond the point, it could be taken off.

Past

Actually, "beyond" might be a better word. A pedantic soul could argue that 'past' means "as you are passing this precise point but it is permitted to take them off again after that".

Mask not mark obviously

I disagree senua, for the reasons I've given in my second post. Past is instead of beyond and effectively has the same meaning.

Report
wowfudge · 09/09/2020 15:11

To clarify, it doesn't have the meaning you've said it could.

senua · 09/09/2020 15:19

Isn't 'beyond' the normal wording for warning / advisory signs?

It should be ‘beyond this point’ really.

Past.

You're going past the point.

You can't go pass the point.

You can't go passed the point.

You pass, you are passed, you go past.

@wowfudge

If saying that, you would say 'mask to be worn TO pass this point'.

I thought you probably did, but I thought it was worth clarifying for anyone who might not.
