What finger food do you give your 8-9 month old in a typical day?

DS is now refusing the spoon apart from pudding so I've got to get creative with finger food

So far he's had
Omelette
Eggy bread
Slightly soggy toast
Sweet potato batons
Carrot batons
Scrambled egg
Melty sticks/puffs

He's good with anything quite soft but does tend to take massive bites so I'm a bit nervy

What sort of thing do you give your 8 month old in a day?

I used to give well cooked asparagus and tender stem brocolli.

My 10 month old has whatever I am having including
Pitta bread with hummous
Cheese slices
Slices of fish - salmon, mackerel
Sticks of peppers or cucumber
Fruit slices- pear, peaches, strawberries
Crumpet and hot cross bun is he steals some of mine
He seems pretty good with lumps so I am not too worried about him choking

DS2 is 7m and much better at weaning than his older brother was, he's had:

banana
squished raspberries
cooked apple
cooked pear
strawberrys (quartered)
carrot (steamed)
brocolli
roast potato
green beans
cucumber strips
pepper sticks (steamed)
pasta spirals (with bolognaise or cheese sauce)
omlette
toast
bread rolls
bagel thins
strips of home made bean burger
rice noodles with shredded salmon

he has also stolen pizza and an oven chip off my plate

(I did BLW my older one too which makes it less stressful with the 2nd one!)

can they have shop-bought hummus?

English muffins is a great idea, thank you, and pita

With cooked pasta do you give penne/fusili? I was worried they'd be a choking hazard but I imagine if they're cooked really soft

I've got a book but it's mainly puree and mashes, I've started following some accounts on instagram as well

You can get baby sized pasta if you are worried about choking, look for soup pasta but yes I just use regular pasta.

Courgette works well in sticks. And everything on toast

Its quite salty so I guess it depends what else they're eating that day...though DS2 has tried it once (DS1 had suspected allergies and we were told to introduce any allergens asap and hummus seemed a good way to do it).

I'm scared of penne so give fusilli usually.

Glad it's not just me who is scared of penne!

I think I'm actually overcooking his veg as I'm so worried about choking etc I need to try to relax more!

I find it really hard to make sure he is having a balanced diet each day while giving enough variety

Me too, I read something about iron recently and then started worrying he's not getting enough!

It's a minefield isn't it!
I think he would quite happily eat melty sticks for every meal with a side of fruit and Weetabix if I let him

Linguine is a good one too break sticks into about 4/5 pieces and mix with Philadelphia and peas. My daughter loves trying to slurp them up.

Have a look on the st John's ambulance website, they have some really good videos on what to do if someone chokes, it's well worth doing a first aid course too (if they are running at the moment). Knowing the difference between gagging (a normal part of learning to swallow) where the baby is red and noisy/coughing, versus choking where the baby cannot make any noise/no coughing and may be turning blue, is helpful too.

Thanks for the tip I was booked into one but was cancelled due to Covid and now there is a backlog so just waiting
Hopefully it will be soon
I'm quite good at recognising when he's just swallowing or spluttering but I just live in fear of a choking incident I think
