Crush injury & attending Nursery.

Morning all,

Posting on here as wasn’t sure where it was best placed. And not sure if anyone is awake to even see it!

2 days ago DD got her fingers caught in the garden gate, resulting in losing 2 of the finger nails on her dominant hand. A trip to hospital, once for initial treatment and again yesterday for a clean up and to see it surgery was needing to fix the nail bed.
No surgery needed so all cleaned up and a bandage put on, which covers her entire hand.
She is fine in herself, no pain medication needed, just some oral antibiotics to prevent infection.

She is due to attend nursery today, but not sure if nursery would allow her to attend with a bandage on?
I’m going to ring at 7.30am when they open but she will be awake in about an hour and will want to go to nursery....
Any one any experience? Any nursery workers on here who can give me an idea as to whether nursery will allow her to attend?

I would of thought they would let her, there isn’t any real reason now to. The injury has been dealt with and as long as she isn’t going to be needing painkillers?

She hasn’t complained of pain and she hasn’t asked for any.

It’s just because it covers her dominant hand, she will need assistance with somethings like pulling her pants up after toilet, cutting food up etc.
And to keep the bandage dry but thats easy enough if they keep her away from any water play.

Mine attended his with a long line and bandage so id say its fine

They should do, if a child broke a bone, would they expect the parent to stay off work for 6 or so weeks as nursery wouldn't take them? Phone them, but I would be surprised if they won't.

It should be fine. One of mine went with a sling for a week or so. They just helped him.

I would let them attend (I manage a nursery) but couldn’t guarantee to keep her away from water play

I'm not sure OP, how has the nursery been since COVID changes? My DD nursery have been very proactive with hand washing for the little ones albeit she is older then your daughter. Obviously a bandaged hand would stop effective hand washing,

But we do have a 48 hour exclusion period for medication, so you should check with them for that

How long has she been on the antibiotics for and will nursery have to give her any? I'm sure when DD was at nursery they would've administer antibiotics for the first 24 hours or so in case of a reaction?

They have a 24 hour exclusion for the antibiotics which she started wednesday night at the hospital.

The bandage covers her entire hand so can still use/wash her left.
As expected, she has woken up asking to go.

I’m a nursery manager and as long as she was well in herself we would let her attend. We would just put a risk assessment in place to support

DS was back at nursery 3 days after hand surgery. We just had to contrive something to keep the bandage dry.

They were fine with her attending. She walked straight in and started showing off her bandage, little love.

Depends on how long you are stuck with the bandage - use adult socks to keep it clean and Bloccs cast protectors to keep it dry! (Memories of 8 weeks with DD post finger injury/ surgery at 8 months old cruising!) Our nursery were much better at keeping it clean and dry than I was!
