Baby bedtimes ??

Sorry if this is a stupid question but first time mum here! Just thinking about the first bedtime routine for baby 6 weeks, as we move through the next few weeks. If you do bath, change, feed, read, sleep type thing, what time to you do this, given that the guidelines are a parent must be in the same room as the baby at all times?

Up till now we have had baby in Moses basket or on us in our living room whilst we eat dinner and chill, (he usually sleeps between about 7.30-10) and then we have taken him to the bedroom with us at about 10 / 10.30 for an early night. We stay up and read whilst he sleeps in the cot.

Obviously moving forward his bedtime will need to be a bit earlier, eg 8pm. How do you start to establish routine bedtimes? Will one of us have to go to bed with him at 8 also?

I kept doing what you are until baby was 6 months old and then I started trying (and usually failing) to put them into their crib in my room after bath routine etc. I also often went to bed verrrry early to catch up on some sleep so just took baby with me then.

I kept them down with me until at least 6 months. Then after that time started a bedtime routine. I’ve always fed to sleep so I used to take us off upstairs, read a story and then feed and put in cot when alseep.

We started doing bath boob bed at about 9pm at 3 or 4 months and just put her in her crib in our room, with the monitor on, for the hour before we went to bed. She just wasn't getting any sleep downstairs in the moses with us, the light and noise kept her awake because she's such a nosy thing, she was practically born with FOMO. Not precisely NHS guideline compliant but it worked for us.

At that age I don't think a bedtime is needed to much. I started a bedtime routine which was bath, bottle, book then relax until he slept. I started this about half 6 but he could go to sleep anytime between 7-10.

I think as long as you start a routine and teach them the difference between day and night then thay is a good start then eventually baby will start to get into a routine.

Also I kept my LB in the moses basket in the same room as me

Similar to PP...
We did bed routine a when he was about 4 months. 6pm boob, bath, story and bed; took about half an hour; crib in our room with monitor. Only do that if it works for you and isn’t going to make you anxious obviously, just sharing so you know that some people break the rules!

Ok thanks for these. So far it seems people either break the rules or don't start the bedtime until after 6 months.

I stuck to the rules and stayed in the room with my baby until six months. It was over winter so not too bad. I don't feel I missed out as I was so tired anyway I'd go to sleep early. Yes it is a bit much but it made me feel better. Bedtime was about 8 pm.

I started at 7 weeks. Baby would refuse to sleep in Moses basket downstairs in the evening, plus I was desperate for an hour to myself.
I did boob, bath, book then bed. She picked it up really quickly and will now happily go to sleep from wide awake on her own in our bedroom with a lullaby playing.
I have a breathing sensor on her that is linked to my phone and a video baby cam that I have on while I am downstairs.

They're not rules, more like guidelines. You can't "break the rules" with a baby because there aren't any rules. You have to do what works for you, and use your common sense.

Agree @Bitchinkitchen sorry I was the poster who said “break the rules” but I meant it quite off hand. I generally hate the confusion between “rules” and “guidelines” so I’m annoyed at myself for doing it 🤦🏼‍♀️

Ok but rules / guidelines whatever- they're there for a reason
