A friend of the family is having a bar mitzvah next month and i wanted to get a little gift. Are average gifts like books/ chocolate/ gift vouchers still appropriate or are there any particular rules I should know about? Thank you Smile

Gift vouchers such as amazon sound a good idea as it gives maximum Freedom to choose. A book is tricky unless you know the boy very well I think. If you just want to get a small token to show you are thinking of him on his special day chocolate is nice unless they are very religious In which case it could be an issue re it not being kosher.

Many people give cash or checks as Bar-Mitzvah gifts, in part because Jewish tradition encourages bar mitzvahs to donate some of their gifts and gift money to charity.
According to tradition, money, checks or gift tokens for £11 or in multiples of 18 will pass good luck onto the bar mitzvah boy.
