Apple watch and iPhone

Is there a way to use one and not the other ? Apparently I’m told of messages come up on one they’d be on the other but I just want to check the watch can’t be used as a second phone as such to have messages or calls separately (and secretly) that don’t show up on the phone ? But I don’t know much about phones etc would be grateful for some help

I dont think they can be used separately. Watch should be paired to phone

So anything like messages etc calls would be on both ?

AFAIK, yes.

You can set it so not everything on phone is also on watch, but not the other way round

What's up?

The older Apple watches need an iPhone connection for data, but can be used on WiFi. I think (but could be wrong) the newer series have inbuilt SIMs.

Just been a bit suspicious for a while but Dh is so not buttered about leaving his phone around so I kept putting it to the back of my mind that I was being paranoid
But then I realised the watch seems vitally important but again I thought stop being silly. He lost the charger today though .... was panicking and angry and somethings just wrong so I was wondering if it’s being used in place of a second phone as it was v out of character

Also WhatsApp can you have it on both but diff conversations/groups on each ?

I’d be like that if I lost my watch, I hate not wearing it and I get very precious about my step count!

They’re also really fiddly to use as a second phone. Great for reading messages, not so much for replying. Taking calls on it is awful, wouldn’t choose to do that regularly!

No. What’s done on the watch (and WhatsApp capability is limited to replying to incoming messages on the Apple Watch) is mirrored on the iPhone.

Basically, you can’t do anything on the Apple Watch that isn’t shown on the paired iPhone.

Ok Thankyou I was just concerned by the reaction when he couldn’t charge it 😳

OP, I was just going to add this - is it possible he’s antsy about his activity stats? If I thought I was jeopardising a good streak of stand/activity/exercise, I’d be furious.

I’m not sure he hasn’t mentioned step count before but it’s a possibility I guess

The watch really is an extension of the phone, not a separate entity. If there’s anything wrong with them though, it’s that you can’t really reply to messages well unless you use one of the set responses which are the usual ‘Can’t talk right now’ or ‘Ok’ type.

I have the series 5 with cellular data so can use away from my phone but it mirrors the settings on my phone. Messaging is crap on them though

I wouldn't be happy if I lost my watch charger and would probably be stomping around looking for it, also with a phone you would probably have a spare charger, unlikely with the watch to have a spare
