Sold my car. Being collected next week. Picking up new one next week. Thought I’d be uber efficient and notify DVLA today that the car is sold to get the tax refund on its way.

Just checked online and my car is untaxed as of today. Obviously. I’d got it in my head that it would run out at the end of the month, as they sell and refund it in monthly increments. I now can’t use my car all week. I’m such a twat.

Probably a good thing, I'd be pissed off buying a car and having the old owner use it in the meantime.

No that was the deal, they knew I’d need to use it in the mean time. Bit fucked now though. Good job Dh has got a few days off and I can use his.

Just re tax it and cancel it in a week?

Does it not need to be declared SORN, OP? I’m pretty sure the DVLA have the power to clamp if it’s not taxed or SORN’d, even if it’s on your driveway

Oh what never mind... the new owner would need to tax it or SORN it

I can’t retax it, they only do it in 6 or 12 month increments. The new owner would have to do that anyway.

I just didn’t think. When you let the DVLA know of the transfer of ownership, it automatically cancels the tax. I was thinking I could do the tax later. Idiot. Hmm

Oh well. Gives me all week to get it nice and clean.

Wouldn’t worry about it then, OP. It’s in the new owners name now so any penalties for it being untaxed will go to them not you. Up to them to tax or SORN it immediately after they become the new keeper.

Tell the buyer you've thought about it, and for an extra fifty quid you'll sort yourself out for a week & they can come & collect it tomorrow 😉
