Let me start by saying I’m in Scotland so this isn’t about masks per se, but about the whole silly dance we are being made to do in order to go about our lives at the moment.

I went to a shopping centre today and won't be back.

It’s the first time I’ve worn a mask for any longer than a quick run into the local coop. I was probably in the centre for an hour and a half but there was sweat pouring down my neck. I felt suffocated and silenced. Hated it.

My baby looked at me like I was a monster and my toddler couldn’t hear me when I talked.

But it wasn’t just masks that were the issue. There was a ludicrous one way system, which makes absolutely no sense to me if we are wearing masks and social distancing. Then every shop had a makeshift entry and exit and their own one way system which no one was observing.

At every turn I was being monitored by security guards, eyeballing me in anticipation of a wrongdoing, ready to pounce.

Almost every shop had a guard on duty forcing you to rub gel on your hands and that of my child before entering.

There were queues everywhere. All but one set of toilets shut, so queue for that too, and toilets themselves as dirty as ever because so many people using the same ones and no cleaning.

Inexplicably in most shops all but one set of tills were shut, again forcing people to congregate in long queues.

All the restaurants were again inexplicably closed apart from, yep, McDonalds and Costa. Both under small enclaves at the back of the centre. But in them you are allowed to take your mask off and eat off a table more or less. But in the main, high roofed wide open walkways of the centre, the mask must go back on.

The shops had little stock.

When I dared approach an M&S assistant to ask for a size (with a visor on like all the rest of the assistants at an angle that perfectly channels their exhalations directly at the person they’re talking too) I was barked at as if I was a naughty schoolgirl to the extent that I put the item back on the rack and walked out without buying anything.

Does anyone else think this is all utterly ludicrous?

Shops will not survive this.

We are all adults with our own minds and perfectly able to manage our selves. Why make masks mandatory if we then have to do all this makeshift posturing to appear to be avoiding each other when really we are being herded closer together.

As someone who you might consider a “hobby shopper” as in it’s one of my pastimes (and I’m not interested in any opinions about having a better hobby, if there weren’t millions like me there wouldn’t be any shops at all). I’m someone who will browse and buy, will pick up bits I don’t really need but just want. I will spend my money happily- if the experience gives me pleasure.

But now I think it’s going to be online for me. I won’t be back at the shopping centre. I won’t be visiting our city centre either as it’s just the same.

That sounds like an awful experience

If they wanted you there they would be more welcoming 🤷‍♀️

Before today you just knew it was the people wearing masks that forgot about social distancing so you could spot who to swerve round. People without masks were still being perfectly sensible. Now everyone is meandering around practically bumping off the walls and each other.

So no, I don't blame you

I'm with you, OP. It's utter shit.

Agree it feels really grim out there. I love nothing more than pottering around the shops on my day off. I've not been buying much but when I do it's going to be online to avoid the fresh hell of shopping at the moment.

Just coming on to say I totally agree. I’m not starting up about masks but when they became mandated in shops it was like being thrown back to March again in that folk were actively jumping out of the way and scowling again if you were 1.99m or less away from them in a barely populated, heavily ventilated hyper market.

Between this, no swimming and no sign of libraries reopening anytime soon, yeah, it’s a bit depressing, I agree.

Prepare for the dementors to appear soon to call you a profligate consumerist slut who takes her infection spreading offspring into densely populated places to wreak deathly havoc.

YANBU.

Which Glasgow shopping centre was this? I assume Glasgow. Buchanan Galleries was okay, I mean yeah some issues but didn’t feel as bad as you describe.

I had to travel yesterday on 3 forms of public transport yesterday. By the time I got there I was a paranoid, sweaty, really fucking pissed off, Mess.

It's SHIT

I meant to add that in order to get in and out of the centre itself you had to walk through a wall of cigarette and vape smoke from all the people standing outside (getting some fresh air after wearing those masks!) which defeats the whole exercise.

Maybe some of the dozens of very important and gravely serious security guards could have gone outside and moved them along... but that would be too sensible.

Not Buchanan Galls but to be honest I’ve hit a wall with all this. Just going to be home and the park until they stop all this nonsense.

That does sound shit.
I went shopping yesterday purposely so I could enjoy it a bit before masks became mandatory. I doubt I’ll bother now they are and will just go back to online shopping.
On the other hand I went for dinner in a local pub tonight and apart from bigger spaces between tables, pre booked only and hand sanitizer at the door, it was totally normal and we had a lovely meal - so there are glimmers of normal life in there!

Poor op, I miss the shops too. I won’t be going out to buy so much as a pint of milk for the foreseeable future either. People are bad enough towards me at the best of times but now they all but thumping me out of their way! Should we look into personal shoppers? 😁

I hear you. I live in a city centre & pottering around the shops with the pram was my way of getting social contract with a newborn pre-lockdown. We used to frequent John Lewis as it had a cafe and great parent room facilities. Lockdown was no fun at all and I was enjoying that things were opening up again. But now with the mask rule I just can't face going to the shops - I'll be buying online as much as possible. I don't see how this is going to make more people go shopping.

Try working an NHS shift OP. And online shopping?

I don’t blame you either. I will wear a mask for as short a time as possible to do essential shopping, otherwise forget it. I will not be going to our nearby town for a day out, to have lunch and do a bit of shopping, any time soon.

Now they are talking about making us all wear gloves as well!

Braehead? I was there last weekend and it was crap. Silverburn was much better imo. Ridiculous one way system (turning areas.. Hmm) but all toilets and most coffee shops and restaurants open.

LouiseTrees · 24/07/2020 22:56

I was thinking Braehead or Silverburn. And there is no M&S in Buchanan Galleries or StEnochs but are ones on Sauchiehall and Argyle Street so close by. I was simply saying Buchanan Galleries seemed better than wherever the OP was. If OP is from Glasgow then the Fort(being outdoors) May also be good.

I am with you, OP. It is so depressing.

It is joyless and aggressive and the high street won’t survive. I feel sorry for the staff in these places - but they aren’t helping themselves endlessly advertising all they are doing to make their customers ‘feel safe’ (translation ‘feel disproportionately freaked out’).

I went to the mall yesterday with my kids. We had a lovely wander round the shops, bought a load of tat and we all wore masks. Even my 7 year old coped.

Don’t know why you found it so hard.

Yeah it’s crap. I’m not someone who enjoys shopping normally anyway so it’s not something I’ll miss but everything is a bit shit now. Went for a walk with a country pub at the end of it-was hoping for a coffee and cake in the beer garden but they just had a shit queuing and takeaway system so we ate sitting on a wall next to the car park.

Took kids to park and swings were chained together 🤷🏼‍♀️.

The staff aren’t helping with their manner. They all seem to suddenly resent doing the original parts of their job like helping people to shop...

I was just chatting to DD about popping into a retail park tomorrow, then remembered I'd have to be muzzled to do so.

Will be staying out of shops for the indefinite future, and I've had enough of shopping online and lost parcels to see this year out too.
