The horror...

I was digging into the "clean-non-iron-to-be-put-away" washing basket this morning in an unsuccessful attempt to find a matching welly sock for my DD...

As I ploughed through the shamefully large pile of washing that we've neglected to sort and put away it stated to smell a bit odd...

I began carefully picking out clothes to sniff as I pondered what the smell could possibly be...

I pulled out one of my pyjama tops and gave it the standard clothing-flick and a shower of maggots rained down on the landing!!!

A half rotten rodent had congealed onto my pyjama top and there were maggots in the clean laundry.

I still feel sick.

I feel like I've survived a horror film.

What the actual fuck. Put your bloody laundry away before it can come to this shameful state.

How long has the laundry been there for the mouse to have time to crawl in, die, rot, and have eggs laid on it which subsequently hatched?!

I don't think leaving washing in a basket directly correlates to rodents using it as a death bed but I'm definitely traumatised enough to make more of an effort to put clothes away!

Oh God, I'd have screamed the place down.

DS had a similar experience the other week, he found a maggoty mouse corpse in the rarely used old dog bed under his desk. Obviously one of the cat's kills that nobody had spotted. I'm so glad I didn't see it. The dog bed had to go straight into the bin.

I once had the strange experience of every time I drove the car there'd be several bluebottles buzzing around inside. After a few days of this I mentioned it to DH, who admitted he'd spilt a tub of maggots in the boot when he'd gone fishing a couple of weeks earlier but had 'forgotten' to tell me. Yuck.

I'm pretty sure that load had been there for less than 2 weeks.

In my defence of the washing situation, we're both "critical workers" and have 2 preschoolers... our priorities have been elsewhere!

Ah, reminds me of the time as a student , we all went home for Xmas from our shared house and someone left the fridge door open... with food in.
Came back to a fridge full of maggots...

Maggots are something I have a phobia of so I would have burned the house down and ran away screaming my head off! They appeared in our bin so it got thrown away!

Gross... You poor thing.

We used to live on a farm and our cats were enthusiastic hunters. They were sadistic shits too, and would bring live prey into the bathroom so they could drop them in the bath and torture them to death play with them for hours. One mouse got away and crawled into the washing, which became its final resting place (either because it was half dead anyway or because it got stuck). I discovered it once I caught that unmistakable smell of rotting rodent.

It had nibbled through the knee of my favourite trousers, too. EnvyAngry

Once upon a time, FIL picked DH and I up to stay at his house.

At the front of his house was a full walled window, and as FIL was watching a movie, DH and I were watching at least 5000 maggots crawls across the patio, and up the full wall window.

It was literally like being in a horror movie. It was thundering too.

I had a horrible maggot experience once. With an ex in 2012. I travelled abroad with my mum and brothers for a few weeks, and ExP stayed in the home we shared. I just naturally assumed he'd keep on top of basic housework. When I got back, it was August so still very hot. We had a VERY angry knock on the door from our neighbour, and when we answered he started shouting something about maggots. I thought he was crazy, but I went to the back garden to check.

ExP hadn't put the bins out the entire time I was gone. In the middle of summer. I am not exaggerating when I say the floor was moving. It was a sea of maggots, streaming out of the bins. The garden floor pulsed. I was so, so disturbed that to this day I believe I must have imagined it, it was just too much like a horror movie. I actually genuinely don't expect anybody to believe that this happened!

Years ago my parents went away for a couple of months and I said I'd go round and check the house and water the plants.

I think about the 4th week as I arrived there was a weird smell.

I watered the plants, helped by 5 and 3 year old daughters and crawling 8 month old son.

Finally realised the smell was coming from the fridge. Not much in there, so opened the small freezer compartment at the top.

Avalanche of maggots! And gooey liquid! Oh god how I didn't heave I don;t know.

Must have been a power cut and there were turkey things in there.

Spent 2 hours cleaning it all up, kids thought it was hilarious!

@BewitchedBotheredandBewildered I poured buckets of boiling water mixed with bleach onto the floor, then locked the door and never went outside again ever, and I still live there now.

That last part was a joke Grin

But what the fuck, your one is so much worse!! The maggots were in the house!! How did YOU get rid of them?!?!

On the motorway to my Grandmothers funeral, one of my brothers found a tub under his seat. It had been full of maggots for fishing, but was now full of bluebottles. He insisted that they were dead, no buzzing, no movement. He opened it. They were very much alive. They filled the car, so Dad drove as fast as he could with all the windows down, but he refused to stop until we got to the church, where we leapt out of the car in a cloud of flies. My relatives were not impressed.

My dad bought maggots for feeding fish or something and had them in our conservatory, but he left them too long and one morning we came down to a conservatory buzzing with dozens of flies. I'll never forget his disgruntled expression as he exclaimed 'They've pupated!'
