Should I buy logoed uniform?

DD is 6 and going into year 2 in September.

School say that jumpers and cardigans have to have the logo on but everything else can be generic/supermarket, although the uniform shop sells logoed polos, PE Tshirts, PE hoodies and hats – this is a CofE voluntary aided school (not sure what that means in terms of uniform/policy).

DD returned to school for 6 weeks on 2nd June. We had to have clean uniform everyday so I went out and bought 2 summer dresses (she refused to wear them in Reception so didn’t have any) plus 2 extra pinafores so she had 6 full sets of uniform in all plus a couple of partial sets (2 summer dresses, 3 pinafores, 2 skirts, 4 jumpers (she hates cardigans), 4 polos)

All the washing has shrunk the logoed jumpers so they no longer fit DD. Jumpers are £12.50 each, which means I’ll spend £50 on jumpers. She also needs new shoes and because of a medical condition she has I have to buy a specific brand and style for her which cost £50+.

I’m a single parent, and can’t really afford £100+ to spend on uniform (her very first school uniform her dad went 50/50 with me on but anything after that has been my responsibility, he even knocked the cost of a pair of trainers off the maintenance once when she needed new ones on his weekend) and as I have no choice about shoes I wondered if I should compromise and just buy 2 two packs of jumpers from Asda for £6?

School is full time minus 1 half day and 1 hour per day a week (losing 7 hours). I had wanted to set some money aside in case she needs shoes or more uniform later in the year (her skirts for example will probably do her another term but won’t make it passed Christmas as school are strict on skirt, short and dress length, they can only be a few inches above the knee).

We will have to have clean uniform each day again in September until at least October half term.

So do I just suck it up and spend £50 on the logoed jumpers? Or risk it and get none logoed?

I buy 3 jumpers in Dds current size and 2 in the next size up, that way I try and wash and dry the 3 but if I don't manage it she has the other 2 to full back on and I never have to replace 5 in one go. I would only buy the jumpers logoed and get everything else generic. Having 5 sets of generic uniform is worth it because of the stress it relieves in the morning getting ready.

I’m not sure why you’d need 4 jumpers or cardigans. Do a wash every other day, they usually dry quickly.

She doesn't need anything else, she has 3 pinafores, 2 skirts, 2 summer dresses 4 polos, which all fit, she might need skirts in October half term or at Christmas but I try and make everything last as long as possible.

Last year she only needed 1 new jumper so I just got her one but as she's needed clean every day due to covid all the washing has meant they've shrunk and no longer fit her so she needs 4-5 new ones

I would email the school office and ask. A couple of logoed jumpers is normally fairly affordable and reasonable, but less so in “clean jumper every day” land. You might find they either help organise the selling of second hand uniform or say supermarket ones are fine.

I've only bought my primary kids 1 logo jumper each this year and 3/4 generic ones. For school photos and events I'll make sure they wear the logo one. I'm a single parent with 4 kids and just can't afford it all.

I've bought my 2 in secondary school 2 jumpers & 3 bottoms each and 5 generic shirts. I'm always washing clothes anyway so could probably manage with less but it cuts down that midweek ironing session a little bit.

Thankfully my mum loves ironing so she comes round at the weekend and does it all, all the uniform does usually mean I only put the washer on once a week but with the "clean uniform everyday" policy it's being used a few times a week

Cut out the logo and stitch it on cheaper ones?

I can't sew for toffee but Ex-MIL might be able to do that good idea!

I have literally no idea how the school will know which if the 300 kids has clean jumpers on each day...who the flip is policing it, and then what are they going to even do, let's say someone decided it was the same jumper from yesterday....and they they ring you and you say it's a clean jumper? Then what?

It's mad.

Just don't bother

What PP said ^^

Our school’s had no such advice, nor have I heard any official advice on changing clothes every day unless you’re actually working in a medical or public-facing field! I don’t believe there’s any evidence that children can transmit COVID-19 by wearing the same jumper two days in a row.

I take the official advice seriously and wash my hands like nobody’s business but this seems to me to be the coronavirus equivalent of security theatre.

Can you cut the logos off the old jumpers and stitch them like badges onto plain ones?

I work in a school and we have logoed polo shirts available but the only children who wear them are the SEN who refuse to wear a jumper. All ours come from Sainsburys. Check with school that they definitely need to have logos on jumpers - our uniform policy states that but in reality they don't mind plain at all!
