Selling a used car

Does anyone have any tips on how to sell a used car privately without getting ripped off?

The car is 14 years old so does have a few dents and scratches now, but it's a fun and reliable car (Mazda MZ5).

I've never sold a car privately before. For example how is it best to take payment?

How much do you think it is worth ?
Have you looked up some prices to see what you think you will get ?

I've only ever sold cars for cash, but we are talking about a few hundred, not any great amounts.

We sold one recently and said either direct bank transfer or cash. The buyer came, liked, and transferred on mobile bank app and we then looked on our internet banking for receipt of funds and then handed over keys and docs. Easy peasy but took 20 mins of faffing on phones and computer on both sides so cash is quicker!

Thanks for your advice. I think it's worth about €3.5k (in Ireland) but not sure how much to accept to knock off for small dents etc.?

Also what happens with test driving. Obviously we would go with them but do we need to check they have insurance or do something something with our insurance?

To repair a dent that hasn’t damaged the paintwork, it’ll be at least £100 a panel. If it goes to the body shop, treble that at least.

I’d look online to see what the rules are about insurance when selling a car privately. They might vary from company to company.
