Apparently my future grandchildren will be named Bridget and Deirdre

The thing is, names come back again so these could be really popular names in a decade or two!

My Mum is astonished at all the preschoolers with what she thinks of as "old lady" names like Ivy and Evelyn.

Bridget and Dierdre are not bad names in themselves, it's just the associations we have with them.

Bridget is a Catholic name and I agree, naff and old womany.

When I was pregnant with dd we asked ds, who was 5 at the time, what he thought his sister should be called. He suggested Susan or Margaret, not terrible names but really not along the lines we were thinking.

I named every inanimate object Albert when I was a kid. This encompassed everything from a concrete gnome to a sheepskin rug I was a weird child
Later I was adamant I would have a Billy and a Sally. We'll, I did have a boy and a girl and I didn't name them that. Thankfully for my parents neither did I go with Cherokee.....😂

Mine are going to be called Theodore and Jack from one and Sophia from another.

I was adamant my child would be called Victoria for years and years, but I have 2 DDs and neither of them are called Victoria!

I like the name Deirdre! Bridget would just make me think of Bridget Jones

I agree with PP though, those names could easily come back into style!

Bobathan is a fantastic name. I can just picture classrooms filled with little Bobathans when it takes off in popularity.

My DM still likes to bring up that I wanted to name my children Guinevere and Lancelot. I did stick with my interest in history many years later when I named DD but she's not a Guinevere

I knew a Deirdre once....good deal younger than me...(am 55) only she pronounced it as Dee-AIR-dra, which sounds much more lovely than Dear-dree, which really smacks of someones elderly irish spinster type relation.

My grandmother, born in 1903, thought her middle name was very old-fashioned. It was Emma. Her first name, which seemed very old-lady-ish to me in the 70s/80s is now very popular again.

My DS told us in all seriousness at around the age of 11 that if he ever has a daughter she will be called Paprika.

He’s almost 15 now and still doesn’t understand why it’s a bad choice.

Not suprised. Bridget is long overdue a comback. I don't love it, but it was last in fashion in the early 2000's, so it's 20 year cycle should be upon us soon. As for Deidree, has she been watching the baby-sitters club? Very much that late 80's/early 90's style.

Bridget has lots of lovely derivatives I am the mother of one who wanted to remember a family member but found Bridget too harsh, but Birdie, Brid, Bridie, Breda are all lovely and I used one of them, now a bit more worldly wise I wish I'd used one of the Scandinavian or French derivatives.

Also Isambard, Balthazar.

And Roger.

After having 5 boys it seems I'm having 5 grandsons as well!

That's if any woman wants kids with my lot with those name suggestions!

In Ireland we pronounce it 'dear-dra'. I know 3 and two of them have always been called Dee.

Prepared to be corrected on this but in Ireland if someone was called Bridget I'd assume they were a traveller.

This will out me to anyone who knows me in RL but when I was pregnant with dc2, ds1 wanted to call the baby Broccoli if it was a girl. Because he didnt like broccoli and did not want a sister. Logical for a 3 year old I suppose! He also named any teddy/vaguely cute thing he owned Bob.

Dc2 was a boy, (phew!) but not called Bob.

Ds1 is 15 now and there are still a couple of Bobs on his bed :)

There'd be a strong chance of it yeah but I don't think I'd automatically assume it. I know a fair few non-Traveller Deirdres.

God knows I'd sooner have a Deirdre or a Bridget in my class than another Ella/Sophie/Ava/Isabella etc - it'd be a nice little diversion from the norm How about a Geraldine?

My 8yr oldds wanted Neville for Gary Neville and Phyllis because he heard it somewhere and thought it was funny.
God help me.
DD 5 wants Bella. There will be no boys as they smell apparently.
