Refund and destroy

I got an email saying I'm getting a refund for a compost bin I bought online back in May which had missing parts and they request that I destroy the defective item.
The thing is, after getting no response from emails to customer service I'd bodged it into useable condition because I needed it and I couldn't afford to buy another one.
Is it okay to keep using the bin they asked me to destroy?

Perfectly reasonable. Don't give it another thought.

Of course

I think they are saying that as a way of not having to accept a return. Also if you keep on using it and somehow it hurts you or damages your property it’s probably a way of avoiding liability for them.

They're saving themselves the trouble of arranging to collect it, OP - if they cared what you did with it, they'd be coming to get it!
