Any reasons this could be so high? (Need to sleep but panicking)

I am freaking out and can't sleep as I stupidly opened an email with my electric/gas bill on it. Some how my bill has gone from being £400 in credit to £2500 in debt. I haven't been able to take readings the last couple of months as my meters down the side of my neighbours property and they wouldn't let me in because of lockdown I let the company know this but could that be why it's so high?

I'm getting myself in a right state as I'm a single mum of three money is tight as it is and I can't afford a that amount of money. I'm so pathetic sitting here crying. I just feel it's the straw that broke the camels back. I've been off work since the start of lockdown with no contact with the outside world and my dd has been diagnosed with anorexia so I'm trying to deal with that plus the two others. It just feels like one thing after the next.

Please don't panic. Call your gas company and query it.

It could easily be a mistake. Have they been billing you a normal amount before this?

My last bill was £140

Was it an estimate?

Sorry to hear that you're having a hard time OP. Can you ask your neighbour to read the meter for you?

I had this, via an email sent at gone 10pm from a supplier we hadn't been with for nearly a year, with a bill of nearly two grand! Long story short, they'd cocked up massively, then cocked up again, then I totally lost my shit and in the end they said I owed them about £200 so I paid it and demanded they take my details off their system, then a few weeks later I got a cheque for the same amount I'd paid them. I banked it. A lot of energy suppliers are very, very badly run. Get some sleep tonight and start work on them tomorrow but I do know how stressful it is. Make lots of notes and ask for names of everyone you speak to. Good luck

I've just realised the latest one says estimate. I am pretty new to this type of billing as I was on the prepayment meters until September last year. I wasn't sure about switching but the energy company swore blind I wouldn't have any sudden crazy bills as I'm on a budget direct debit. Will call them in the morning and see if I can get anywhere.

From Everything That you've said it sounds like it's some sort of cock up. Even if it isn't, and you have someone racked up a whopper bill in such a short space of time, just call them and tell them that you can't afford to pay it and will have to pay in installments of whatever amount you can afford. You won't have to pay it all at once.

Our bills - estimated - swing every month from about £400 credit to £400 owing. I swear to god they make it up as they go along 🙄
I’m sure it’s a mistake. Contact them when they open and I’m sure it can be rectified.

Are you sure it isn't a scam email?

Spoke to them and it turns out they have lost the first reading on their system so it says it was at 0. So now I've had to put in a complaint. I've managed to get a reading today and have to give another next week so they can work out the last 9 months.
