Smeg products - worth the price?

Me and DC's use the jug and toaster an awful lot, and while I buy good brands, they always die within about a year. I'm looking replacing my current ones with Smeg products - a lot more expensive but worth it?
Just would like some honest opinions.

Smeg are beautiful, but I have always read that quality not great. The SMEG name on the kettle etc for example is just a sticker and peels off eventually. Swan retro are cheaper and similar styling.. Can't comment on longterm quality tho.. Though we have freezer and and fridge and they are definitely things of beauty and seem sturdy.

I've never had Smeg, the look doesn't appeal but we have a Dualit toaster, It's about £200 but the parts are replaceable rather than disposing and buying new.

Definitely a Dualit toaster. Beautiful and built to last.

Thanks. Hmmm interesting re quality. I always assumed Smeg were amazing due to the price and would last for years . . . but sounds like it is essentially just a label.

I would recommend reading reviews of their fridges etc, general consensus is absolutely beautiful, but poor build quality. I too would have assumed that they would be solid and last for ever, but it seems not.

I had a smeg dishwasher once it caught on fire and nearly burnt down my kitchen - their response was shocking
My dad had the same one which also caught fire, thankfully he saw the smoke immediately
Neither were cheap, but the quality was awful.
Would never buy anything from them again

I won a smeg kettle and toaster. They look pretty but would never have paid £100 each for them!

In laws have a smeg fridge and say it's not worth it at all

Dualit are very good.

The glass in my Smeg oven shattered whilst on the self clean cycle. The engineer they sent to look at it as it was still under warranty said it wasn’t the first time he’d seen it happen with that model either. I don’t think the quality is very good. I second the Dualit toaster recommendation. My parents have one that was bought in the mid 90s and still works like it was new.

no
style over substance.
I have a smeg range cooker and it's positively shit (was left behind by sellers - now I know why!)

My sister bought smeg appliances when she did her kitchen. Within two years they’d all been replaced.

I’ve got a dualit toaster, bought in 2005. It’s great. 🙂

I bought a smeg oven a couple of years ago and have been really happy with it. Much better than the top of the range neff and Bosch ovens I had I previous houses.

I briefly considered a smeg fridge, but couldn't find a tall version without an ice box so went for a swan version for the fraction of the price and booked an extra holiday with the price difference.

My Smeg oven has just died at 3 years. DH was insistent we replace it with another Smeg to match the second oven and hob in our once-in-a -lifetime expensive kitchen. In my view this was just throwing good money after bad and, fortunately, when said replacement arrived the build quality and damage was shocking, so it’s gone back and I’m now getting my own way with a Which Best Buy at half the price.

I’m not surprised to read the reviews on here and fully expect to have to be shelling out to replace my other Smeg appliances before long.

Do you mean the Portofino, ShyTown? I'm planning to buy that model later on, when we do work in the kitchen, because of its self cleaning thing (and because I can get green Blush)

No not the Portofino, it was a couple of years ago so can’t remember the model but it was an integrated single oven that was sort of glassy looking.

I had Smeg appliances in my kitchen when I bought a new build. With the exception of the hob I had to get them all repaired for one reason or another working a relatively short period of time. I wouldn’t buy their products again.

I have a dualit kettle and toaster which I am very happy with so they would also be my recommendation.

I've had my Smeg kettle for years. It's beautiful.
I hate my mum's Dualit toaster.

Somehow fridge and kettle here, absolutely would not buy again!

We had a Smeg kettle, it was fine but no better than a normal kettle.

In fact it wasn’t great at all. The lid stopped opening early on then after a year or so it developed a leak through the little window thing where you can see the water level.

Smeg fridges are a rip off, plus they're massive. I know two people who have to keep their fridges in the living room because they don't fit into the kitchen. Looks fucking ridiculous.
