Do compression socks for Plantar Fasciitis work?

DianaT1969 · 29/02/2020 13:37

Sorry, not strictly style and beauty, but I don't know where else to ask this. I've had PF for a couple of years. I do the exercises and wear supportive footwear, but it's getting worse and I am contemplating PF compression socks. Do they work or do more harm? Any recommended brands? Thanks

On the style and beauty front I did buy a navy heattech car coat from Uniqglo and it's the best lightweight coat ever. Inspired by a thread about buying less, resisting impulse buys and prioritising purchases on a spreadsheet.

I found the night time boot to be the most effective thing although I also used the compression socks and felt they helped a bit.

If you have had it for that long I think you should ask GP to refer to physio.
I have had it for a year and its just starting to improve.
There are supports on Amazon which may help.

They didn’t for me personally. I had it during my last pregnancy and it thankfully disappeared when he was about 3 months old. I had to wear running trainers of Birkenstock’s all of the time, any other shoes just aggravated it. I also made sure I wore the Birkenstock’s around the house, being barefoot made it a lot worse.

Thanks everyone. Interesting about Birkenstocks, I wear them around the house too but find Fitflops slightly better. I may try the night ones first as per your suggestion. I'll increase exercises and get to a physio if it doesn't improve in a month. I think losing the 2 stone of additional weight I'm carrying would help a lot.

Not for me only the orthotics help me and never wearing flat hard shoes.

I wear both compression socks and orthotic inserts from Superdrug. They make a big difference.

I’m the opposite and Birkenstock’s made it worse for me because there is no real support.

Fitflops really helped.

I also want to add that I didn’t lose any weight and mine still went away after I basically tried everything!!

So don’t put off trying to get rid of it until you lose weight.

They just gave me cramp in my feet. Orthotics in trainers/boots or Birkenstocks at all times helped mine, as did massage, ice and stretches. I've never tried Fitflops but can no longer wear Crocs or completely flat shoes such as ballet flats.

Good to know that weight isn't such a factor.

You need enetor insoles.

I live in fitflops now, even my holiday flip flops and my everyday slippers.

I've mentioned before but sports massage can really help with loosening calf muscles (which are frequently behind pf issues). Then regular stretching of same.

Also dry needling.

I asked a question recently about plantar fasciitus, but never knew there were compression socks! Several people replied that they wear 'fitflops' around the house and never go barefoot. I have a stocking to wear at night that has a velcro strap which keeps the toes pulled back. It seem to help, but I often wake and cannot get back to sleep as my toes hurt when wearing it. I think a boot style one would be better. Another person recommended acupuncture, but I haven't tried it myself.

Yes it definitely made a difference to mine. I only wear it at night and don’t wake up hobbling. Now only occasionally wear it when I remember to pop it on and just do so for preventing it returning.

I have been wearing special compression socks and using orthotics and I no longer have any pain. I’m not sure the socks have cured the plantar fasciitis but they’ve relieved the symptoms. I’ve just been on a two week holiday with a lot of walking involved and I had no pain. I wore trainers with the socks and orthotics. I don’t think backless shoes are recommended with this condition.

Going barefoot has helped me. I can wear shoes for a while but too long, and it flares up again. Personally I suggest trying a few different things and seeing what works best for you.

MBT shoes are the only one that worked for me and I have been using it for the last 12 years. Bit pricey and lots of fake about. I get mine from Back in Action.

I don't know how to post a link but have you tried the spiky rolling foot massagers? It cured mine in a couple of days. Look on amazon at spiky foot massager for of

I’m wearing Fitflop slippers round the house and wearing the support socks at night. The combination of those have made a big improvement over a fortnight.

What I found helped enormously was the Scholl insoles I found in Boots for about £25. Enabled me to walk without pain - before that I’d been hobbling very painfully.
Wore them in both shoes for several weeks, until the problem disappeared.
That was years ago and I’ve never had it since - but still have the insoles, in case.
Two BiLs with PF paid hundreds of ££ for specially made insoles, with no better results.

I tried a compression sock briefly but it didn’t help me.

What really helped was the night time boot as a pp mentioned, and wearing FitFlop branded shoes and sandals.

Oh wow, spikey foot massager sounds ideal. My feet often feel desperate for a massage. I'll buy that on Amazon now.
Also to the poster who mentioned wearing flipflops around the house, it may have been autocorrect, but it's the brand Fitflops that help for me. I imagine standard flipflops would be far too flat for most PF sufferers.
Massage to calf muscles noted too, thanks. There is a lot that I haven't been doing. Will start taking this seriously now with the hope of fixing it, rather than a way of life.

Another vote here for Fitflops. I put them on the second I opened my eyes in a morning and wore them until bedtime. PF was improved within weeks. They are just the jelly type I wear, with the thick soles. Amazon tend to have them around £16-£25 much of the time. I now also have the trainers.
