I’ve never really used my first name ,always used my middle name ,.on my wedding certificate the registrar put my middle name first as that’s what everyone calls me.
Passport office want proof of a name change from first name to middle name
Obviously I’ve not got that ,lots of people use their second name when they don’t like their first name, why would I change it officially as they are both my name.
I’m about to loose my £80 fee ,as this has been has been going backwards and forwards for some time ,
I’ve simply not got the proof they want ,
What on Earth can I do
I’m 46 always lived in uk and never had a passport before

Do you have your birth certificate?

The marriage certificate is proof enough.

Just do a deed poll. It's technically free but passport office seem to want an official looking document which you can buy for a tenner off the internet.

I went back to my maiden name without getting divorced and ended up doing a deed poll just to make the bureaucracy easier. It's ludicrous!!

Can you do a deed poll now with your names reversed?

Given you presumably had to provide your birth certificate when getting married, I’m amazed the registrar used your middle name on your wedding cert.

But surely they’ll need to issue your passport in your legal, not preferred name? Both your names will be on your passport, they can’t just miss one off?

Have you got bank accounts and bills etc in the name as you use it? Won't they accept those if they are in quantity, i.e. a bank account, some other account, two or three different bills? What a pain.

It doesn't really matter what people call you, you use the name on your birth certificate and make sure any other documents you submit match that (and that you put it on the form that way as well). What are they saying you can do now to remedy the situation?

They will go by the name on your birth certificate. People can call you whatever you want them to but legally your first name is what is on the birth certificate surely? The passport office are right to be very wary of this, I’m sure you understand the importance of names on passports being legally accurate.

Or you just put up with a different name on your passport.

My name is a different version of my real name. It's just life.

The registrar will have put the name you gave them. Didn't you have to use your full name on the paperwork?

Ask the registry office?

PeakingDuck I thought that at first but then there might be problems down the line if tickets and passport are in different names.

They are saying the registrar recorded my names wrong ,I can’t do a change of name now they are asking for a past change ,which I’ve explained I’ve not got
They want proof from when I started using my middle name ,but that was over 20 years ago and I’ve nothing official at all to say when exactly I started using my middle name
They have also phoned me up and made me feel I’ve done something wrong ,I haven’t

Yes... tickets would need to be booked in the same name as passport.

Well, they did...

And because of that, you can’t use your birth certificate + your marriage certificate to provide the ‘trail’ of name changes.

Tulipan · 17/02/2020 07:50

Oh ... just make sure whatever name ends up on your passport is the name you use to book travel tickets under!

I worked in a high street bank for years. People using their middle names caused so many problems. I had people scream at me cause I couldn't pay cheques in cause they where in the wrong name. It just seems to cause so many problems.

It sounds like you'll have to get your application declined, lose your fee, get your name changed by deed poll, and reapply.

Report
PineappleDanish · 17/02/2020 07:51

But that's the whole point. You haven't changed your name.

Legally, you are still Sarah Mary Jones, even though you've always called yourself Mary Sarah Jones. And everyone else calls you that too. The Passport Office are not going to issue a document in the "wrong" names on your say-so.

Are the tickets booked? Otherwise use your birth certificate and passport name and book tickets in that name. My passport is in my adoption name but I have a deed poll with a different name for everything.

No one gets a name change when they just Use their middle name .

They do if they want to be legally recognised as their middle name.
