House making a hooting/honking noise

Since we moved in 4 years ago when it's very windy (Storm Ciara) there a hooting/honking noise in the house.

Our attached neighbours have lived here since the 70s and they think it's their TV aerial. I think it sounds more like the chimney. We've had a cowl put on the chimney last year to no effect. Before we remove the chimney (and spend £££) which do you think it's more likely to be? For reference the sound is a bit like a very low honking saxophone (but obviously only one note 😂)

Is air leaking in around one of your window frames? I lived in a rental house years ago that honked/buzzed due to a poor seal around one of the windows.

We have had all the windows replaced 2 years ago and we have vents but they're closed at night. The same noise is both night and day.

Don't discount it being the windows - even though mine was newly fitted, it was making that sort of noise. Took us ages to find it but once we did, bit of silicone around the seal sorted it.
You could ask your window fitters to come back but, if it's anything like mine was, it typically won't happen while they're there.

I was going to say windows too.. Blush

Does your kitchen have an extractor fan? Tumble dryer vent? Is it air coming in one of those? (Our extractor outlet vents flap in the wind)

We had it in the family home when I was a kid and it was wind blowing under the front door. Only happened occasionally, but there was a metal strip at the bottom of the door so it had the same effect as blowing through grass stretched between your thumbs, or a reed on a wind instrument. It sounded like a woodwind section of an orchestra warming up sometimes.
Of course, it might not be the wind....... (woooh. Spooky!)

Our neighbours hear the same sound but have just shrugged it off for years as being their aerial. They had their windows replaced last year.

I can't feel any draught in the house when it's windy and I've closed the window vents.

Front door replaced when windows were replaced.

Kitchen does have an extractor fan but the noise is quieter not louder in there. No tumble drier vent.

The sound comes from the middle of the house/roof/loft.

Have you got chimney breasts/fires? I’m amazed the amount of noise that travels down ours to our fireplace, but not sure what part of it would make a noise like you’ve described. How curious 🤔

Ooh we get this. I think its the guttering as the sound comes from the corner of the house where the wind whips down the alley.
DP thinks its the window on back bedroom.

It's not impossible it's the fascias/soffits. Would make sense why it bothers us more than them. It's a joined but not technically shared chimney breast but no one seems to be like 'yes we had that noise and it was our chimney'. Might need to investigate the guttering as an option.

In my house the guttering emits a loud note when the wind is in a certain (unusual) direction.

Report
Grasspigeons · 14/02/2020 22:29

Our soffits used to do that - it was a loeis pitched honk. And the windows made a higher pitched squeal

We have some air tiles in the roof that make this noise in high winds sort of like blowing across a beer bottle

I know you said the sound seems to be coming from the middle of the house so hear me out. We’ve had the same honking, really only when windy and it took me ages to figure out that despite where it sounded like it was coming from it was actually because our fence panel “holder” thing (not sure what it’s called!) is screwed onto our house, it must be something weird with noise travel radiating across the house but that was our cause. Good luck, it’s annoying for sure!

Could it be air in your pipes and you just associate it with the wind because you're more likely to have the heating on if it's cold?

Report
MoltonSilver · 14/02/2020 22:50

I think that sound would come from wind going through something tubular, like maybe a soil pipe.

Report
thirdpassport · 14/02/2020 22:57

Could it be in your pipes? We had whooshing and rattling sounds in our pipes before a plumber came and sorted out a small leak that had let some air into the central heating system.

It's the windows! This used to terrify me when I was a child Grin

We get noise in our boiler flue when the wind is blowing the right/wrong way, could it be that?

Hopefully it’s not a poltergoose 😁

Report
Mirackleeus · 15/02/2020 00:07

We've had a new boiler + flue this year. Changed practically everything but the soffits!

You’ve got an owl, a goose, and some bees. And someone playing a kazoo.

You might as well charge them rent.

My windows did this exact honking noise, they were under 2yr old. Guy came and put silicone round and not done since
