Dry January 2020. A new relationship with alcohol. Who’s joining me?

It’s that time again!
I did my first dry January around 5 years ago, having seen it on here. It was a great thing to do: really helped my get control of my drinking. Since then I’ve done it every year, along with at least one or two other dry months.

DJ may help you:
Lose weight. ...
Get better skin. ...
Make healthier food choices. ...
Save money. ...
Sleep better. ...
Have more energy. ...
Improve your mood. ...
Improve your general health

and make you feel virtuous!

It’s not necessarily easy though, so it’s good to have support; especially if you’re feeling week and like you may give up. We can support each other here.

Join me! Brew

Good morning!

I’ll do it. Have never done it before so it will be interesting. Need to form a new relationship with alcohol.

I'm in- when are you starting?

Welcome all!

I’m starting on the 1st of January - when I get up in the morning. I will be drinking on Hogmanay (well I am Scottish) and there’s a possibility I may have a few sips after midnight, but then that’s it.

Got the thread started early to try and get some like minded folk together. I guess some may have started already, straight after Christmas.

Anyway, however many days you’re doing, good luck everyone.

I'll join too.
I need a very clear head for next year as I am pushing through with a financial settlement after Decree Nisi. Have been messed around for nearly two years and I'm not playing nice anymore.

I will be doing it- I did it last a few years ago and then again this year and I just wanted to share my experience in case it encourages someone else.
Using the try dry app (yellow one) every day this year, following a dry January has completely reset my relationship with alcohol. I’ve had about 300 alcohol free days in 2019 where previously, even after dry January, I would have one glass of wine every day or every other day. I feel much better for it. I’ve not been drunk once this year (still time tomorrow Grin)
Anyway. I highly recommend it. I didn’t think I would have the willpower for it but it was the best thing I did this year.

I will be, did it a couple of years ago, I did say I would never do it again but I feel like I really need it this year, and the forums here were a big support

Me! I've been terrible this month and not great this year in general. I want to lose weight, have better skin, be happier and sleep better. I find all of those happen when I don't drink.

So glad you’re all joining us.

I’ve just downloaded the Try Dry app, thanks for the tip, beep

I’m in! Getting straight back to low carb from 2nd (hangover carbs on the first may be necessary) so no booze will also help

I’m in. Like others I want to lose weight but mainly want to reset my drinking. I don’t drink every day or anything like that but a few times a week and I always finish the bottle. I want to stop after a couple of glasses.

Same here Els1e. I need to stop finishing the bottle. A reset is needed!

The app sounds good. I'm going to get that.

Me please!

Have de-lurked after a very long time in order to join you.

I have an okay relationship with alcohol but after a month of drinking pretty much every day, and finding myself saying yes to a glass more than I say no, I think my liver would appreciate a month off.

I did give DJ a go a couple of years ago and only managed 2 weeks so doing it with others really appeals.

Nice to have you all aboard!

I've done this alone before, but this year am also getting fit and losing weight (5:2 diet) so will need huge pile of resolve and self discipline.
It's nice to have a thread for encouragement and support.

I’m joining. This past year has been extremely difficult and I have drunk my way through it. I’ve never managed a whole month (other than when I was pregnant) so am looking forward to the challenge of 30 days off. My DH is also doing it with me.

Yes, count me in! Did dry Jan last year, even made it halfway through Feb but need to reset my relationship with alcohol. Up to dry January 2019 I was averaging 20 units per week, now it’s 10 per week but I’d like to cut down even more. Dry January really helped me so I thoroughly recommend it!

I'm in too - I won't be starting until 5th as we're away for a few days round NY but I'm planning to carry on until half term starts on 15th feb.

I did it last year with one slip, but then fell back into bad habits again. I usually only drink at weekends but they started on Thursday... I'm getting fat and not sleeping well so need to reset properly!

I'm in too, did a dry month this year and am weirdly looking forward to this. It's hard but so worthwhile 👍

I'm in too and am starting today, after a party last night that I can't even remember today. I have that awful ashamed feeling where I'm worried about what I might have said or done, and a person at the party has posted awful photos of me on FB which I don't even recall being taken.

So I have stocked up on soft drinks and tonic water and want to enter the New Year with a clear head and a commitment to reducing my drinking, starting with dry January! Have managed 6 weeks off alcohol in the past but no longer than that, ideally I'd like to continue past January if possible. Will be good to have people to share the experience with!

I’m in too! I have two chronic health conditions that drinking doesn’t really help (no contraindications with meds or I wouldn’t drink at all).

I don’t drink tonnes anyway really, DH & I share a bottle of wine a couple of nights a week usually, however have been on the “Fuck It It’s Christmas” path since about the 15th December and had a drink every day! Blush
