Hotel choc Velvetiser

DragonmotherKhaleesi · 09/11/2019 16:55

Hi all.
I'm looking at buying a hotel chocolat velvetiser but the cost of the flakes is putting me off.
Does anyone use it with chocolate powder eg Cadbury's drinking chocolate?

Thanks

It's a hundred pounds! ONE HUNDRED POUNDS! £100! I literally can't believe how expensive it is (and I read somewhere that the chocolate isn't as hot as it should be.

I make it on the hob with a whisk. Lovely. 😊

@SpiderCharlotte I think your comment is a bit ridiculous. If you are that poor you shouldn't comment on a thread which is clearly regarding spending money

@Sahej I think your comment is a bit ridiculous. If you look again at the OP, the cost of the flakes is putting her off so this isn't a "LOOK AT ME I SPEND SO MUCH MONEY IT'S SUCH FUN" thread. Wind yourself in and don't be so insulting.

Spider why comment if you can’t answer the OP’s question?

Wtf is going on here?
Ignore them Spider it is just that time of night.

Back to the question- why would you spend £100 on something to do the job of a £1.50 whisk and then use crappy chocolate powder?

It's a simple (and overpriced) milk heater and whisker, you can wang anything you like in it. The fluid doesn't pass through a filter or anything.

It heats to 70'C which isn't hot enough for my tastes, and I've seen enough complaints of early failure to put me off completely. Make sure you get a good warranty.

If you do a search, there are some previous threads discussing this (some people have tried it, with mixed results).

Hth.

You can buy milk frothers that warm the milk and whisk it at the same time for about £10. I honestly wouldn't waste your money.

I bought a similar item from Lidl during one of their specials weeks for less than £20. Like a mini kettle with a whisk in. The Velvetiser does seem very expensive in comparison

Unfortunately I haven't used it that often to comment on whether it is any good, but if the Hotel Choc version makes hot chocolate at the same temperature as sold in their cafes then yes, it's luke warm at best.

If you are that poor you shouldn't comment on a thread which is clearly regarding spending money

It's not about being poor, it's about whether the item in question is worth the price tag. Unless you are very very wealthy, it's always worth taking a moment to think about whether the item is worth the money, whether it does what you want it to do, to a good standard, and if you will use it.

I could go out and buy 10 Velvetisers today and it wouldn't affect me financially at all, but it would be a waste of money as demonstrated by the Lidl version that I bought and have used once or twice.

Someone bought one for us as a gift. It makes nice chocolate but I would never have spent that much money on it. It says only to use their chocolate flakes but we’ve tried using Lidl own brand chocolate bars - finely grated - and that was at least as nice. Not sure chocolate powder would work.

I've got an electric milk frother from amazon, think it's a lavazza one. I bought it for coffee but used it with hot chocolate powder this weekend and it was delicious, really frothy and creamy. It heats the milk as well so would melt chocolate shavings if you wanted to use them instead.

Cost about £25 and I can't see the difference between mine and a velvetiser to be honest (except the velvetiser looks a bit prettier Grin)

I have a velvetiser! It was an unexpected gift. Cadbury’s works ok but it doesn’t feel as luxurious and velvety as the Hotel Chocolat sachets. I’ve resorted to buying the sachets again as an everyday luxury for the cold months!

I've read that it's exact the same as this https://www.johnlewis.com/dualit-milk-frother-black/p231706525. Still pricey but less so.

Never tried the Velvetiser myself but the Guardian review says that she uses cacao powder and honey and it works just fine which would suggest hot choc would be ok. I was very, very tempted by it but went for a La Cafetiere Coco Hot Chocolate stove instead from Amazon and love it. I reasoned that there is less to go wrong and it sits directly on the hot plate so the milk gets fully hot.

My nespresso milk foamier does the same job a lot cheaper and also makes milk for coffee
Why anyone would buy a velvetiser is beyond me

@Sahej/@EnFinale good grief you two are terribly serious about something that makes hot chocolate. 😂😂😂

Thanks for your concern about my finances Sahej but I'm bloody minted so concern yourself not. Let me know if you need to borrow a fiver though eh? 😜

I love my velvetiser. I’ve used other brand chocolate flakes in it - Betty’s, Montezuma’s - and they work fine. Mostly I just use the Hotel Chocolat sachets though.

I use it a lot

@SpiderCharlotte hot chocolate is actually very serious to me! I can't say why it's too outing and if you were minted you wouldn't have said that so quit while you're ahead

@Sahej your seriousness about hot chocolate is 'outing'? Who would actually care apart from you? You win the prize for the most ridiculous posts I've seen on this forum for quite some time. Well done you! 😂

I can't honestly believe you've got your knickers in a twist about something so trivial.

Ooh... Shock Intrigued now!
Are you the owner of Hotel Chocolate, Sahej?

And if you are the owner, can we have a special discount? I remember when it was just the chocolate tasting club...

@Sahej Oh don't be so ridiculous. I haven't in any way been 'mean' to you.

This is your first comment to me. You think that it was kind? Not in my book.

Maybe you need an updated book as I just stated a simple fact and after that all you've done is be mean. I've had employees with the same nature as you and I'll tell you it doesn't get you far. Anyway I accept your apology if that's what you're trying to say
