Saint’s name for confirmation

DD8 is starting the process for to be confirmed into the Catholic Church. We are doing some research about what name she should pick.

So far we have read about Saint Teresa of Calcutta, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux and Saint Bernadette of Lourdes.

Any other suggestions? Ideally I’m looking for some stories to share that don’t end in some sort of horrific execution at an early age. The story also has to be relatable, for example she really likes Saint Thérèse because she did lots of little acts of kindness and that made sense to her.

Mary is out because that’s her middle name and she wants something different.

You could start with looking at significant dates. There are so many saints, I always think it's a shame to go for a "celebrity" like Teresa without having some deeper understanding.

Oh! This is odd to me. I live in Spain and your name is you Saints' name and you celebrate your Saints day etc.

Is her name not possibly a saint aleady? Look at the calendar of Saints Days to get an idea.

I.E Fathers' Day here is St Josep etc.

I would go for santa Maria. Very proper, very Catholic and it is her name. It is not the thing to do here at all to pick and chose what you fancy!!!

It is very interesting the different traditions around the world. We are in New Zealand and you choose a name of a saint that you feel a particular affinity towards.

Her first name is not a Saint’s name. Good idea to look at dates. Her date of birth is St David’s Day. Will check her baptism day.

DD chose Cecilia, patron saint of musicians and I chose Theresa cos that was my best friends name at the time!

I'm in Ireland and we do not have to chose a saints name any more. It makes it easier.

My friend chose Priscilla and I chose Crescentia.

We spent hours in the school library researching Saints names. The priest at our confirmation was wide eyed at our choices compared to all the Claire and Marys.

Will add Clare (my middle name) and Cecilia to the list. We have Genevieve on there as the Patron St of Paris.

We don’t have any New Zealand Saints yet, although the canonisation process has commenced for Suzanne Aubert (an amazing woman if you wanted to read more about her).

@Mookins14 given how often she leaves her school jersey at school perhaps that might help! Her teacher is Irish as she was telling me that they can pick a name from the Bible as well.

Saint Catherine of Siena would be nice, learned and hard working, or Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist and cousin to Mary.

Remember you do not need to be a female Saint. Dd2 decided on St Michael the archangel and another girl picked St Joseph that year.

My kids (NI) picked their favourite names that were also Saints . We have a Stella and an Isabella. The majority of kids did the same - I think we had a plethora of Catherine, Bridget, Anastasia, Helen, Elizabeth in their classes. My sister picked a saint whose feast day was her birthday and mine was my sponsors name. Bernadette and Therese were the go to confirmation names of my mums generation. My mum, my mil and most of my older female relatives have a Bernadette somewhere in their names.

I think St Therese is a wonderful example for young girls. You might want to look at some saints from the 20th century such as St Gianna Molla and St Edith Stein (although the latter died in Auschwitz so may not be age appropriate to discuss her life story). There were also four new female saints canonised by Pope Francis this month: catholicherald.co.uk/news/2019/10/11/who-are-the-four-women-being-canonised-alongside-john-henry-newman/

Mine is Christine, after my mum who passed away when I was a baby.

But equally my cousins were Aidan (after his favourite footballer at the time) and Patrick (after the starfish from Spongebob) 😂

Mine is Anne after Saint Anne, mother of Mary. She's the patron saint of unmarried women, women in labour and women wishing for pregnancy.
