Has anyone else been to see it yet?

What a film. Not at all what I expected and I didn't expect to get so emotionally involved in it. Surely he's a shoo in for the Oscar?

I thought it was fantastic and I said the same about the Oscar. It was very uncomfortable to watch, but I think that was the intention given the subject matter

Totally agree - it wasn't necessary or vulgar

Agree with all of that. It was harrowing to watch tbh. Saw Judy the night before and thought Renee Zellweger was Oscar worthy but that the film wasn’t (although it was great). This one though, both Joaquin Phoenix’s performance and the film are Oscar worthy imo. Quite remarkable. Think I might go again......

Superb performance from Joaquin Phoenix. It was quite uncomfortable but it was a fantastic film. I felt quite sorry for him.

I thought it was one of the strangest films I had ever seen. I didn't enjoy it.

I utterly adored it and agree JP should get his Oscar at last! Absolutely gripping and amazing. Not a second too long either.
I saw it yesterday and would happily watch it again today; I can't stop thinking about it. I've even listened to Gary Glitter today to recreate some of the magic Smile
Ps I don't usually like Batman films!

I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Great performance from Joachim Phoenix, quite tear jerking at times. Wonderful film.

Saw it last night. Felt like the majority of the film set 'the background' of the joker. Was really good!

I felt quite sorry for him.

Me too @UndomesticHousewife, really took me aback. He was a product of his upbringing / misfortunes. The bit with the girl in his building almost made me cry!

I'd love to see it, but I won't as it looks so bleak and violent, I can't cope with anything these days. The reviews I've read sound like it deserves awards.

It was fantastic. Not really fussed with Batman but the story told by this film was so sad and gripping.

I'm going to see an 11am showing of it on Wednesday after the school run. Grin Cannot wait!

I don't know if there is ever a good time for a movie that paints mass murder as a logical conclusion to a socialially isolated, debatable neurodiverant, white man being failed by the system, but I feel this is not it.

OP, do you need to know much about the Batman universe to 'get' this film? I think it looks really good, and I love love love Joaquin Phoenix, but don't know much about Batman.

Is this an origin story?

DH saw it tonight, said JP most definitely deserves an oscar. He said it was very dark and violent. He is never bothered by films but said he was shocked it was only a 15 due to the subject matter.

Penny I don't know much about Batman, haven't seen all the other films, and I understood and enjoyed it just fine. I think the only things that might be useful to know are that Batman's name is Bruce Wayne and that his parents were murdered when he was a little boy, by a random mugger, as they left a theatre with Bruce.

Christine

Thank you :) I think I'll give it a go, I've always been intrigued by The Joker as a character.

You don't need to see or know of batman films to watch it. Some of the film involves snippets of the comic storylines but it's not cannon.

I wondered...given his age and that of Bruce Wayne in this whether he really is the joker at all or it was another hallucination at the end? Because by the time Bruce Wayne becomes Batman the joker would be too old?

Thought it was an amazing film, definitely Oscar worthy. I found it so moving. Am going again on Monday.

See, the stuff about it being really violent confuses me. I'm a massive weenie and I HATE violence and gore but it really wasn't bad at all. There is one scene (which I'd anticipated because I knew it in there) where I closed my eyes but it's no more violent than anything else on TV.

I think people have massively hammed up the brutality of it!

But I agree that it's a fantastic film, I enjoyed every minute of it.

amused - the bit you are talking about was pretty graphic I believe. My DH watches all sorts of horror and violence but commented on that specifically. He said the main reason he was surprised it wasn't an 18 was due to the story itself though.

@amusedbush I agree with you. I thought it was all necessary

I saw it last night with DP and DS. We all came out lost for words at its brilliance.
I admit I haven't seen anything with Joaquin Phoenix in since he was in Parenthood Grin, but he was exceptional. (I used to adore his big bro Sad Saw all his films!)

I really want to see Joker again - listening to the soundtrack now!
