Anyone used to get a spoonful of malt extract as a kid?

Spotted a jar in Holland and Barratt today and it reminded me my dad used to give us kids a spoonful a day. Not sure why? 🤔 Anyone else get given this and know what it was supposed to be used for? I almost bought a jar but decided it probably wouldn't taste how I remembered it Smile

Yes!!!

And I bought some a year or so ago and it tastes just as delicious and yum yum yum as it did as a child

Just make sure you don’t buy the one with added cod liver oil Shock

It’s high in vitamin A and good for malnourished children.

My mother used to take brewers yeast for vitamin B.

I used to have the Horlicks tablets as a child.

We had cod liver oil. So grim. Then DM started buying the capsules and I'd hide them in my pockets. I'll never forget when one burst in my school trousers during a history lesson. Ye gods the smell! Blush

I did too. I thought the malt was to disguise the cod liver oil taste, but it seems that it too is healthy from a quick google

"malt extract has a significantly lower glycemic index than table sugar. * Supports Digestive Health: Malt extract can be good for your gut. ... It is an abundant source of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, dietary silicon (supports bone health), B complex vitamins and micro minerals"

I used to love it and everyone I know who had it as a child still loves it. Equally everyone who hasn't had it that I know has ever tried it, hates it. Seems to be a memory thing. It tasted good then so still does!

Yes. Had a huge brown jar of the stuff.

Loved it.

Every few weeks I think we got it. The dog also got a spoonful to lick too and he loved it, as he used to line up behind us for his turn!

I presume it was just an additional supplement mum gave us.

Roo has his daily spoonful from Kanga. Tigger decides that Malt Extract is what Tiggers eat. With a spoonful of when he needed strengthening.

Virol.

Then as I got older there was Bemax and Bengers, Bemax was dry flaky stuff to sprinkle on your food and Bengers was a milky drink which I really liked. School teacher told us about them and I miss Bengers to this day.

I often wonder what happened to the teacher too.

I don't think I had malt extract but I was given syrup of figs, which I loathed.

We got some kind of fluorescent green/yellow stuff. I've no idea what it was. Some kind of emulsion ( not paintSmile ).
Would anyone know what it was ?

bean Was it Minadex? My mother used to buy it as a tonic in the spring if she thought I looked a bit peaky. I didn't like it. There was also Parish's Food - a tonic you had to drink through a straw or it would stain your teeth.
